Chapter 10 - The Shifting Shadows

The flashing red and blue lights of the two police cruisers painted the front of the house in vibrant, strobe-like hues, casting long, erratic shadows across the cherry-wood trim of the porch.

Gwendolyn was already in cuffs, her face pressed against the rear window of the cruiser, screaming obscenities that were muffled by the reinforced glass. Chloe sat on the grass beside her discarded designer luggage, sobbing uncontrollably into her phone while the taxi driver slowly pulled away from the curb, abandoning them to their fate.

Samuel stood alone near the moving truck, a broken man in a ruined life, watching the police lights reflect off the asphalt. He didn't look at me. He didn't ask for help. He was a ghost inhabiting a world he had allowed others to dismantle piece by piece.

I stood beside Marcus, my hands resting calmly in the pockets of my blazer, watching the officers secure the property. The house—my mother’s house—finally felt quiet again. The toxic weight that had choked the air for nine long years had been swept out into the desert heat.

"Well," Marcus murmured, sliding the court order back into his portfolio. "The civil injunction is locked, the trust is fully restored in your name, and the federal investigators have everything they need to tear Julian Cross's old network apart from the inside."

"Good," I said quietly, taking a deep breath of the evening air.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. Expecting another update from Detective Miller or one of Marcus’s associates, I pulled it out and glanced at the screen.

It wasn't an official notification. It was an encrypted email from an unknown sender in Chicago, containing a single scanned document stamped with the letterhead of a private Swiss bank account—an account bearing my mother’s maiden name, with a multi-million-dollar balance that had never been disclosed during the original probate filing.

Below the scanned document was a short, chilling text message:

“The house was only the front, Paige. Your mother’s real legacy is waiting in Zurich... and someone else is already trying to cash it out.”
