Chapter 3 - The Midday Knock

The white BMW X5 bearing Marcus’s firm logo rolled slowly down Cactus Wren Drive at precisely 10:15 AM, pulling directly into the driveway and blocking Gwendolyn’s pristine silver Audi.

I sat in the passenger seat of Marcus’s car, wearing a tailored navy blazer and dark sunglasses, watching the front door through the tinted glass.

Marcus stepped out first, adjusting his tie with the practiced authority of a man who spent his life dismantling corporate empires and family estates. He walked up the stone steps and pressed the doorbell. The loud, cheerful chime echoed from within.

A moment later, the front door swung open.

Gwendolyn stood in the doorway, wearing a silk loungewear set, a cup of green tea in her hand. Her face radiated the serene, untouchable smugness of a queen who had successfully banished a rival from the court.

When she saw Marcus standing there in a three-piece suit holding a leather portfolio, her smile faltered just a fraction.

"Can I help you?" she asked coolly, her voice carrying across the yard. "If this is about solar panel installations, we're not interested."

"Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, his tone entirely flat and professional. "My name is Marcus Vance, senior counsel for the estate of Eleanor Hayes."

Gwendolyn stiffened. Eleanor Hayes was my mother’s maiden name—the name attached to every foundational legal document of this property.

"I don't know any Eleanor Hayes," Gwendolyn snapped, her grip tightening on her teacup. "And Samuel isn't home right now. If you have business with this household, you can leave your card in the mailbox."

"Actually, my business is with the actual owner of this property," Marcus replied smoothly, pulling a crisp, multi-page legal packet from his leather portfolio. "And according to Maricopa County Deed Records, Instrument 2002-0941822, neither you nor Samuel hold any legal title to this parcel whatsoever. You are currently occupying a private residence under false pretenses as unauthorized holdover tenants."

The color drained from Gwendolyn’s face so fast it looked like someone had turned off an overhead light.

"What... what are you talking about?" she stammered, taking a step backward into the foyer. "Samuel owns this house! We've lived here for nine years!"

"Samuel signed a quitclaim surrender in 2005 that relinquished all primary ownership rights to his late wife's irrevocable trust," Marcus stated loudly enough for anyone inside the house to hear. "And as of 8:00 AM this morning, the sole trustee—Paige Hayes—has formally exercised her right of immediate repossession."

From behind Gwendolyn, Chloe appeared in the doorway, her phone still clutched in her hand, her expression twisting from bored amusement into absolute panic.

"Mom? What is that guy talking about?" Chloe shrilled, pushing past Gwendolyn. "What do you mean we don't own the house? Call Dad right now!"
