Chapter 9 - The Confrontation on the Lawn

I pushed the car door open and stepped out onto the sidewalk, Marcus right beside me, walking with the measured, unhurried pace of a prosecutor entering a courtroom.

Gwendolyn had dropped her phone. It lay shattered on the pavement, its screen dark, while her face had twisted from smug arrogance into an ugly, mask-like panic. When she saw me approaching, she lunged forward like a cornered animal, her manicured fingers clawing at the air.

"You did this!" Gwendolyn shrieked, her voice echoing down the quiet suburban cul-de-sac as neighbors peeked through their blinds. "You ungrateful, selfish little bitch! You couldn't just let us have the house! You had to ruin everything!"

"Gwendolyn, shut your mouth!" Samuel shouted, standing up from his plastic chair with a sudden, desperate burst of energy as he staggered toward his wife. "Is what she said true?! Did you forge those documents? Did you steal from Eleanor's estate?!"

Gwendolyn scoffed, turning on Samuel with blistering contempt. "Open your eyes, you pathetic, spineless fool! You really thought a successful woman like me would look twice at an accountant with a mid-level salary and a dead wife's baggage without a master plan?! You gave me the keys the second we signed the marriage license!"

The words hit Samuel like a physical blow. He staggered backward, catching himself against the side of the moving truck, his breath catching in his throat as the full, devastating reality of his life choices finally crushed him into dust.

Chloe came rushing out of the front door, dragging a massive designer suitcase behind her, her face stained with tears and smeared makeup.

"Mom! The bank card didn't work! I tried to order an Uber to a hotel and it's declined!" Chloe cried hysterically. "What is happening?! Why are all our clothes on the lawn?!"

"Shut up, Chloe! Just shut up!" Gwendolyn snapped, grabbing her daughter's arm and trying to drag her toward a waiting taxi that had just pulled up to the curb.

"Not so fast, Gwendolyn," a calm, authoritative voice cut through the chaos.

Marcus stepped forward, holding a crisp document bearing the emblem of the Maricopa County Superior Court.

"As of two minutes ago, a judge has issued an emergency civil asset freeze and a criminal bench subpoena for your immediate detention pending a financial audit," Marcus announced, raising his voice so the arriving police cruisers turning the corner of Cactus Wren Drive could hear every word. "You aren't going to a hotel, Mrs. Vance. You're going downtown."
