Chapter 3 - The Blueprint of Betrayal

The desk lamp cast a harsh, yellow pool of light over the papers I spread across the mahogany surface.
The first page was a corporate lease agreement for a luxury one-bedroom apartment downtown in the River North district. The tenant’s name was listed as Chloe Vance—Alejandro’s twenty-five-year-old marketing assistant, the very woman he claimed to be “mentoring” late into the evening twice a week.
“You’ve been paying for her apartment with my savings?” I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm as I flipped to the next page.
It was a series of bank statements showing regular, systematic wire transfers moving money out of our joint savings account and into an offshore holding account registered under a shell corporation.
And right beneath the financial records were printed screenshots of text messages between Alejandro and Chloe.
“Does Mariana suspect anything yet?” Chloe’s message read, dated three days ago.
“Never,” Alejandro had replied. “She’s a broken shell of a woman. As long as I keep telling Sergio she’s too fragile to leave the house, she’ll stay locked up like a prisoner. Once I get the general manager promotion and the stock options, I’ll file for divorce on the grounds of abandonment due to mental instability. She won't get a dime.”
I stared at the words until they blurred together.
Behind me, Alejandro was kneeling on the carpet, his hands pressed together in a pathetic, pleading gesture. “She trapped me, Mariana! It was a mistake! Chloe threatened to go to HR and claim sexual harassment if I didn't help her climb the corporate ladder! She forced me into it!”
I slowly lifted my eyes from the paper and looked down at my husband. The man who had supposedly stayed by my side through the darkest hours of my life, the man I had convinced myself was my anchor, was nothing more than an opportunistic coward who had weaponized my grief as cover for his infidelity and financial theft.
“You didn't stay home with me because you loved me, Alejandro,” I said softly, the realization finally solidifying like a tombstone in my chest. “You stayed home so I wouldn't leave the house long enough to notice you stealing my life.”
“That’s not true!” he cried, reaching out to grab the hem of my trousers. “We can fix this! We can sell the condo, split the money, and—and I’ll cut ties with her tomorrow! Just... don't ruin my career. Sergio is coming back to the office on Monday to finalize the promotion. If you blow this up, I’ll lose everything!”
“Good,” I said.
I picked up the burner phone that had fallen out of the folder. The screen flickered to life, showing an active text thread with the unknown number that had messaged me fifteen minutes ago.
I tapped the screen and read the sender profile name.
Chloe Vance.

She wasn't just his mistress. She was a co-conspirator who had grown tired of waiting for him to pull the trigger on our marriage.
