Chapter 5 - The Knock on the Door

Alejandro remained slumped on the floor, staring up at me with a look of utter incomprehension, as if he were only now realizing that the quiet, broken woman he had manipulated for seven years was a stranger he never understood at all.

“You’re going to ruin us,” he whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. “We’ll lose the condo, the cars, my job... everything.”

“Not us, Alejandro,” I corrected him, standing up from the desk and buttoning the cuffs of my sweater. “*You.*”

Before he could scramble to his feet, a sharp, heavy knock echoed through the quiet condo.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

It wasn't a polite knock. It was the heavy, authoritative rhythm of someone who wasn't going away.

Alejandro scrambled backward, his eyes fixed on the front hallway. “Who... who could that be at this hour? It’s past midnight!”

I walked out of the den, leaving him kneeling on the carpet, and crossed the living room toward the entryway. The hallway light cast a long, linear shadow across the hardwood floor.

I reached out and unlocked the deadbolt, pulling the heavy wooden door open a few inches.

Standing on the landing wasn't Chloe. And it wasn't the police.

It was Sergio Mendoza.

He was still wearing his tailored suit jacket, but his tie was loosened, and his face carried an expression of grim, chilling determination. In his hand, he held a manila envelope identical to the one sitting on my den desk.

“Dr. Torres,” Sergio said, his voice hard as iron, looking past me into the dimly lit foyer. “I’m sorry to disturb you so late. But after I left your house tonight, my son Daniel—the boy you saved thirteen years ago—looked up corporate compliance files from my office server.”

Sergio stepped closer, his dark eyes locked onto mine.

“And he found your husband’s name attached to something very interesting regarding my regional firm.”
