Chapter 4 - The Midnight Call

Before Alejandro could lunge for the phone, my thumb hit the call button on Chloe’s burner number.

The device began to ring on speaker.

Ring... ring...

Alejandro froze, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he scrambled across the floor, his hands hovering frantically over my arm. “Don't answer it! Hang up! What are you doing?!”

On the third ring, the line clicked open.

A sharp, impatient female voice cut through the quiet den. “Alejandro, I told you not to call me from your personal line tonight. Did you tell her? Did you finally drop the hammer so we can stop playing house?”

I didn't say a word. I let the speaker amplify the silence hanging heavy in the room.

The voice on the other end faltered. A cold, sudden realization crept into Chloe’s tone. “...Hello? Who is this?”

“It’s Mariana,” I said, my voice completely devoid of emotion, sharp as a surgical scalpel.

A sharp intake of breath hissed through the speaker. Then, a nervous, defensive laugh. “Oh. Right. Alejandro’s... wife. Well, I suppose it’s better you know. He was going to tell you eventually anyway. You’ve been living in a dream world for years, hiding away while your husband builds a real life with someone who actually matters.”

Alejandro buried his face in his hands, groaning in absolute despair. “Shut up, Chloe... just shut up...”

“No, let her speak,” I said smoothly, leaning back in the leather chair. “Tell me, Chloe, does Sergio Mendoza know that his star protégé is embezzling regional marketing funds to pay for your luxury downtown lease?”

The line went dead silent. The ambient background noise—the faint hum of a television in Chloe’s apartment—vanished behind a wall of absolute panic.

“What... what are you talking about?” Chloe stammered, her voice losing all its razor-sharp confidence.

“I’m looking at the bank routing numbers right now,” I lied smoothly, watching Alejandro flinch. “Every single wire transfer from the firm’s regional promotional account straight to your landlord. It’s all documented in the safe. Along with your text messages planning how to frame my mental instability for the divorce settlement.”

“You’re bluffing,” she hissed, though her voice was trembling violently. “If you go to Sergio, Alejandro goes down too! He’s the one who signed off on the accounts!”

“Let him,” I replied evenly. “I’m a trauma surgeon, Chloe. I spent years stitching people back together after they tore themselves apart. But your little boyfriend here? He’s bleeding out from self-inflicted wounds, and I’m fresh out of gauze.”

I ended the call and tossed the burner phone onto the desk.
