Chapter 3 - The Notice to Vacate

The knock came again—louder this time, accompanied by the distinct jingle of heavy keys.

Heath blinked, turning his head toward the hallway. "Who is that? Did you invite someone over?"

I didn't answer. I walked calmly around the kitchen island, stepping past Rhonda, and walked down the short hallway to the front door. I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled it open.

Standing on the porch was Marcus, a senior process server from Melissa’s firm, holding a thick manila envelope and a clipboard. Behind him in the driveway sat a gray sedan with its engine idling.

"Good morning, Mrs. Vance," Marcus said, offering a polite, entirely humorless nod. "I have an official service of notice regarding the residential occupancy agreement."

Heath and Rhonda appeared behind me in the hallway, their faces a mixture of confusion and renewed panic.

"What is this now?" Heath demanded, stepping past me into the doorway. "Who are you?"

Marcus didn't blink. He pulled a folded legal document from the manila envelope and handed it directly to Heath.

"Notice to Vacate and Revocation of Secondary Residency Rights," Marcus recited smoothly. "According to the property rider attached to the pre-nuptial agreement, since Mr. Heath Vance has formally attempted to alter the household structure, seize financial control of primary assets, and introduce unauthorized third-party oversight without the owner's consent, the probationary residency clause has been immediately terminated."

Heath stared at the paper, his mouth working silently. "Residency... terminated? What does that even mean?"

"It means," I said, my voice cutting through the morning air like a blade, "that your probationary trial period as a resident in my house is officially over. You have forty-eight hours to pack your clothes and your personal belongings, Heath. The locks are being changed tomorrow at noon."

Rhonda let out a sound like a punctured tire.

"You can't do that!" she screamed, lunging past her son onto the front porch. "He is your husband! He has a legal right to live under this roof! You can't just throw him out on the street like a stray dog!"

"He's not being thrown out on the street, Rhonda," Marcus replied calmly, stepping aside so she could see the gray sedan idling in the driveway. "He has an apartment downtown that his mother's credit score helped him secure last month—remember? The one you quietly rented as a 'man cave' just in case things got too crowded here."

Both Heath and Rhonda froze.

The color vanished from Heath’s face for the second time that morning. He looked at his mother with absolute betrayal.

"You rented an apartment behind my back?" Heath asked, his voice shaking.

Rhonda swallowed hard, her composure completely shattering. "I... I just wanted us to have options, Heath! You know how stubborn she is!"

I looked at my husband—the man who had spent the last six days acting like a landlord in a house he didn't own, conspiring with his mother to dismantle my life.

"Well, it looks like you have your options now," I said, resting my hand against the open door. "See you at noon tomorrow, Heath. Make sure you don't leave anything behind."
