Chapter 9 - The Subpoena Execution

The conference room at Melissa’s downtown law firm smelled of polished mahogany and high-end leather, but the atmosphere inside was electric with tension.

It was 9:00 AM the next morning.

Victor Cruz sat at the far end of the long glass table, flanked by a nervous-looking local defense attorney who kept whispering into his ear. Cruz looked older than his public directory photos suggested—thinning gray hair, heavy bags under his eyes, and the distinct, jittery energy of a man who knew his legal immunity was running out of road.

Melissa sat at the head of the table, her hands resting calmly on a crisp stack of court-stamped documents, while I sat directly across from Cruz, watching him with quiet, unblinking detachment.

"Mr. Cruz," Melissa began, her voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. "We are here for an emergency deposition pursuant to civil racketeering and title fraud statutes. Let’s direct your attention to Exhibit A—a wire transfer originating from a bank account held by Heath and Rhonda Vance, deposited into your firm’s operating account on the fourteenth of last month."

Cruz swallowed hard, sliding his collar away from his neck with one finger. He looked at his attorney, but his attorney simply shrugged, clearly realizing the evidence was airtight.

"That... that was a standard legal consultation retainer," Cruz muttered, his voice raspy and defensive. "Families hire attorneys for estate planning all the time."

"Estate planning doesn't usually involve filing fraudulent administrative liens using defunct corporate shells belonging to incarcerated fraudsters like Julian Cross," Melissa countered smoothly, sliding a second document across the table. "Unless, of course, the 'estate planning' was actually a conspiracy to manufacture fake debt against a primary residential title belonging to Ms. Hayes."

Cruz stared down at the paper. The color completely drained from his face. He knew he had been caught dead to rights.

"Look," Cruz stammered, holding his hands up in a defensive gesture. "I was just following instructions! Rhonda Vance came to me claiming her son was trapped in an unfair pre-nuptial agreement that stripped him of his marital rights. She said she wanted leverage to force a fair settlement!"

"Leverage is one thing, Mr. Cruz. Criminal conspiracy is another," I spoke up for the first time, my voice low and steady. "You filed a false lien using a defunct syndicate network. That’s a felony."

Cruz flinched, looking directly into my eyes for a second before turning back to Melissa. "Fine! What do you want? I'll withdraw the lien today. I'll sign an affidavit stating that Rhonda and Heath directed the entire filing."

Melissa didn't smile. She simply slid a pen across the table.

May you like

"Sign the affidavit right now, Mr. Cruz," Melissa instructed coldly. "And then we'll let the prosecutor decide how cooperative you want to be when the warrants are issued for your co-conspirators."
