Chapter 8 - The Meeting at the Resource Center

By 4:00 PM, I had locked the front door of the house, activated the secondary security perimeter, and driven down to the neighborhood resource center.
The building was quiet after the afternoon rush. The staff had gone home, leaving only the soft hum of the air conditioning units and the amber glow of the exit signs in the hallways. I sat behind my desk in the director's office, spreading out copies of the title search, the pre-nuptial agreement, and the newly filed Vanguard lien across the wooden surface.
The door to my office pushed open with a soft squeak.
Marcus, the senior process server and private investigator who worked closely with Melissa’s firm, stepped inside, closing the door firmly behind him. He looked like a man who had spent the afternoon digging through very dirty laundry.
"You found something," I stated, looking up from the paperwork.
Marcus pulled out a chair and sat down across from me, tossing a thick file onto the desk.
"More than something," Marcus said grimly. "I ran a deep-dive trace on Victor Cruz's recent financial deposits. Guess whose name popped up as the source of a ten-thousand-dollar retainer wired into Cruz’s account three days ago?"
I didn't even have to guess. "Rhonda."
"Not just Rhonda," Marcus corrected, flipping open the file to a bank transaction record. "The wire originated from a joint account held by Rhonda Vance and... Heath Vance. They didn't just hire Cruz yesterday. They retained his services two weeks before the wedding."
The air in the office felt like it had been sucked out of the room.
My mind raced backward through the weeks leading up to our ceremony—the casual conversations about property, Rhonda’s endless questions about the mortgage documents, Heath’s sudden insistence on moving into my house instead of finding a neutral place together.
It hadn't been a rushed relationship. It hadn't been a normal marriage.
It had been a premeditated financial hostile takeover, engineered by a mother-in-law who thought she had found an easy mark in a woman who ran a community resource center.
"They planned the entire asset grab before we even walked down the aisle," I whispered, the realization settling over me like lead. "The pre-nuptial agreement was the only thing standing between them and my house, so when I made Heath sign it without realizing he hadn't read it, their entire syndicate plan collapsed."
"And now they're panicking," Marcus added. "Cruz is trying to slap fraudulent liens on the property to force a settlement before the courts catch up with the wire transfers. But we can flip the script on them."
"How?" I asked.

"We don't wait for them to make another administrative filing," Marcus said, leaning forward with a sharp, calculating smile. "We subpoena Cruz’s financial records under the state’s civil racketeering statutes, drag him into a deposition tomorrow morning, and force Victor Cruz to testify under oath that Heath and Rhonda hired him to execute a fraudulent title transfer."
