Chapter 4 - The SEC Folder

Judge Whitman tapped his gavel once, restoring absolute silence to the room.

“Ms. Kensington,” the judge said, looking down from the bench. “What is contained within that federal folder?”

Evelyn stood up, her posture immaculate. “Your Honor, the documents provided by the Securities and Exchange Commission detail a systematic asset-stripping operation tied directly to Northern Lake Capital. Specifically, Mr. Jamal Price has been systematically siphoning client trust funds into offshore accounts, using forged identity documents—including my client’s dormant utility accounts—to create synthetic credit profiles.”

She paused, letting the weight of the words settle over the courtroom.

“Furthermore, the federal investigation reveals that Mr. Price’s fraudulent scheme was partially capitalized by high-risk loans backed by commercial real estate assets owned by Richard and Patricia Vale.”

My father’s jaw dropped. He whipped his head around to stare at Jamal, his voice rising in panic. “What? Jamal, you said those investments were fully insured! You said our retirement funds were completely safe!”

Jamal’s face twisted into an ugly snarl. “Shut up, you old fool! If you hadn't insisted on buying Brittany that condo in downtown Chicago with unverified liquidity, none of this would have crossed the SEC’s radar!”

“You lied to us!” my mother screamed, lunging across the aisle toward her son-in-law before the federal agents stepped neatly between them, blocking her path with quiet, immovable authority.

The courtroom dissolved into absolute chaos. My mother was sobbing hysterically, my father was shouting accusations at Jamal, and Brittany was hyperventilating in her seat, her pristine maternity dress looking absurdly out of place against the backdrop of a federal felony arrest.

Judge Whitman didn't bother using his gavel this time. He simply watched the wreckage of my family with cold, detached indifference.

“Mr. Price,” Judge Whitman said, his voice cutting through the noise. “You are remanded to the custody of the federal marshals pending a formal arraignment on charges of wire fraud, identity theft, and securities manipulation.”

The two federal agents stepped forward, their hands sliding smoothly toward their cuffs. Jamal didn't run. He just stood there, his expensive suit suddenly looking like a cheap costume, his polished smile replaced by a look of abject, cowering terror.

As the agents led him down the aisle past the gallery, Jamal stopped for a fraction of a second, his eyes locking onto mine with venomous hatred.

“You think you’ve won,” he hissed under his breath as he passed my table. “They’ll take everything from you too once the audits hit your department.”

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply opened the SEC folder resting on the defense table, revealing page after page of certified bank routing numbers bearing my signature as the lead federal investigator assigned to break up Northern Lake Capital.
