Chapter 6 - The Shadow of Sterling

The crisp Chicago wind whipped across the plaza outside the federal courthouse, carrying the faint, metallic scent of autumn rain off Lake Michigan. I stood at the edge of the limestone steps, my thumb pressed against the glass of my phone screen as the encrypted satellite map rendered the location: a sprawling, gated industrial warehouse complex situated along the Calumet River, tagged directly to the freight distribution giant Moretti Logistics.

Arthur Sterling.

The name wasn't just a corporate outlier anymore; it was the keystone holding together every fraudulent ledger, every forged banking routing number, and every illegal shell company my family had unknowingly hitched their wagon to. My father, Richard Vale, hadn't just been a retired suburban patriarch playing golf; he had been a silent, leveraged partner in Sterling’s multi-million-dollar import-export laundering ring, using his own real estate holdings to wash the funds that Jamal Price funneled through Northern Lake Capital.

“Cassidy?” Evelyn Kensington’s voice cut through the rising wind. She stood beside me, pulling her wool coat tighter around her shoulders, her sharp eyes studying my face. “That notification wasn't a standard SEC alert, was it?”

“No,” I replied quietly, turning the screen slightly toward her so she could see the flashing red designation codes. “It’s a direct operational feed from the enforcement division. The raid on Moretti Logistics just went live. And my father’s name is listed as the primary guarantor on the physical inventory manifests currently being seized by federal marshals.”

Evelyn let out a low, gravelly whistle. “Good grief. Richard didn't just help Jamal commit white-collar fraud; he hitched his retirement straight to an international shipping syndicate.”

“Which means he didn't just lose his brokerage investments today,” I said, looking out toward the gray expanse of the city skyline. “He’s about to lose everything he ever built, down to the last brick of the country club he loves so much.”

Before Evelyn could answer, the glass doors behind us banged open.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the marble steps, followed by a breathless, desperate voice.
