Chapter 5 - The Seal is Broken

Jamal froze. He stared down at the cover page of the federal file, reading my full official title—*Senior Forensic Investigator, SEC Division of Enforcement*—printed neatly beneath my signature.

The color drained from his face entirely, and for the first time all morning, he looked like a man who realized he had walked into a slaughterhouse disguised as a courtroom.

The federal marshals didn't give him time to recover. They gripped his elbows firmly and steered him out through the heavy oak doors of the courtroom, the heavy click of the latch sounding like a final verdict.

Mr. Caldwell, realizing his career as an attorney was effectively over the moment his firm’s ties to Northern Lake were subpoenaed, gathered his files with trembling hands and bolted out of the side exit without saying a word.

Judge Whitman leaned back in his leather chair, looking down at me with a faint, wry smile. “It appears, Ms. Vale, that your technical support cover story was remarkably effective.”

“Thank you, Your Honor,” I said, standing up and buttoning my charcoal-gray suit jacket. “Truth is rarely what people expect when they’re looking down at someone.”

In the gallery, my parents sat in stunned, paralyzed silence. My father looked ten years older, slumped forward with his head in his hands, realizing that his lifetime of social climbing, country club posturing, and financial manipulation had just evaporated into thin air. My mother was staring blankly at the empty aisle where Jamal had just been dragged away, her lace handkerchief clutched in a tight, ruined ball in her lap.

Brittany looked up at me, her eyes red-rimmed and venomous. “You planned this,” she whispered, her voice shaking with rage. “You let us come here. You let us humiliate ourselves just so you could trap Jamal.”

“I didn't trap him, Brittany,” I said, picking up my leather briefcase and sliding the SEC folder inside. “He walked right into an open vault and started stealing. I just left the door unlocked.”

I turned away from the defense table, leaving my family sitting in the wreckage of their own greed.

As I walked down the center aisle toward the grand oak doors of the federal courthouse, Evelyn fell into step beside me, her heels clicking rhythmically against the marble floor.

“Well handled, Cassidy,” Evelyn murmured as we pushed through the heavy glass doors into the crisp Chicago air. “Though I suspect your parents’ troubles are only just beginning.”

“They’re learning their first real lesson in accountability,” I replied, looking out over the skyline toward the River North district where my paid-off condo stood safely overlooking the water.

My phone buzzed sharply in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out, expecting a frantic message from my mother or a legal threat from my father’s ruined brokerage firm.

Instead, it was a high-priority push notification from the SEC central server, accompanied by an encrypted satellite coordinate map.

The subject line read: SEC RAID AUTHORIZED — MORETTI LOGISTICS OFFSHORE REPO INVENTORY.

And right beneath it, listed as the primary financial backer hiding behind my father’s corporate shell accounts, was a name that tied the entire Chicago underworld directly back to my family’s dinner table:

Arthur Sterling.
