Chapter 5 - The Digital Vault

Chad didn't hesitate. Driven by sheer, unadulterated panic, he bolted up the wooden staircase, his footsteps thundering overhead. A second later, we heard the heavy thud of him throwing open the door to my home office.

Evelyn walked calmly to the bottom of the stairs, looking up with a faint, chilling smile.

“He’s opening the wall safe,” she remarked quietly to Christopher.

“Let him,” my father replied.

From upstairs, we heard a frantic sound—metal clicking, frantic button presses, followed by a sharp, triumphant laugh.

“Got it!” Chad yelled down the stairwell, his voice dripping with manic relief. “I have the master drive! With this, I can bargain with the federal prosecutor! I can pin the whole thing on Eleanor and walk away clean!”

My mother gasped, clutching her chest. “Traitor! You miserable, spineless—!”

“Quiet, Eleanor,” Christopher commanded, raising a single finger.

Chad came rushing back down the stairs, clutching a small, heavy black encryption drive in his hand, a manic grin stretched across his face. He reached the bottom landing, expecting to push past us out the front door.

Instead, standing squarely in the doorway, blocking his only exit, were two armed federal marshals who must have slipped through the side patio doors while Chad was rummaging upstairs.

Chad stopped dead in his tracks, the grin vanishing from his face as the cold steel cuffs clicked around his wrists before he even had time to lift the drive.

“Chad Price,” the lead marshal said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion. “You are under federal arrest for conspiracy, wire fraud, and obstruction of justice.”

As they dragged him backward past the living room, Chad caught my eye one last time, his mouth opening in a silent plea for mercy.

I didn't blink. I didn't smile. I simply reached out, took the small black drive from the marshal’s gloved hand, and slipped it into my pocket.

“Thank you for locating the evidence, Chad,” I said quietly. “It saves us the trouble of subpoenaing your personal cloud storage.”

The front door slammed shut behind the marshals, leaving a heavy, suffocating silence in the living room. Eleanor was shaking violently in her chair, and Brenda was quietly backing toward the kitchen window, looking for a way out.

I knelt down beside Toby, who was still clutching his toy truck, watching the commotion with wide, innocent eyes.

“Come on, baby,” I whispered, taking his small hand in mine. “Let’s go home.”

As I stood up, holding my son’s hand, my phone buzzed sharply in my coat pocket. I pulled it out and glanced at the glowing screen.

It wasn’t a text from the federal prosecutor.

It was an automated alert from a secure financial server tracking the offshore accounts tied to the black drive I was now holding.

And the name registered as the primary secondary beneficiary on the vault wasn’t Chad, and it wasn’t my mother.

It was my younger brother, Lucas—whom I hadn’t seen in five years, and who was currently sitting on the board of directors for Moretti Logistics.
