Chapter 6 - The Phantom Brother

The soft, pulsing glow of the phone screen felt heavy against my palm, the name Lucas Lindqvist burning like an ember in the quiet wreckage of the living room.
My younger brother. The golden boy of the family, sent away to Wharton business school eight years ago on our father’s dime, supposedly building an independent career in global supply chain management. For half a decade, Lucas had remained an elusive ghost in our family dynamics—too busy with international logistics, too important to attend holidays, too insulated by corporate success to care about the petty suburban dramas plaguing the rest of us.
And yet, right there on the encrypted security readout linked to the black encryption drive Chad had just tried to use as a get-out-of-jail-free card, Lucas’s digital signature was stamped as the primary secondary beneficiary of the offshore vault.
“Genevieve?” Christopher’s voice broke through my thoughts, deep and sharp as he shifted his weight on his cane, holding Toby securely against his side. “What is it? You’ve gone entirely white.”
I didn't answer right away. I handed the phone to Evelyn Kensington, who was still standing near the front door. Her sharp legal eyes scanned the notification, her silver eyebrows knitting together in sudden, concentrated disbelief.
“Lucas?” Evelyn murmured, looking up from the screen to meet my gaze. “Your brother is listed on the secondary routing keys for the Moretti Logistics shell accounts? The same Moretti Logistics currently under federal indictment for interstate trafficking and financial laundering?”
Eleanor, who had been sitting in paralyzed silence on the sofa, let out a sharp, hysterical gasp. She lunged forward, her fingers clawing at the armrest. “Don't you dare bring Lucas into this! My son has nothing to do with your criminal messes! He is a respected executive in New York—he wouldn't soil his hands with Chad’s pathetic little embezzlement schemes!”
“Mother,” I said, turning to look at her with a chilling, hollow calm. “Chad didn't have the technical prowess to set up an offshore multi-tier holding corporation on his own. He was a mid-level logistics manager who couldn't balance a checkbook without software assistance. But Lucas? Lucas specialized in global maritime supply chains.”
Before Eleanor could scream another denial, Evelyn’s phone buzzed sharply in her hand.
“That’s my office,” Evelyn said, swiping the screen. She pressed it to her ear, listened for three seconds, and her face went completely rigid. “Yes... Are you certain? Check the physical routing IP. ...Understood.”
She lowered the phone slowly, her eyes locking onto my father.
“Christopher,” Evelyn said, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “The federal marshals just executed a secondary search warrant at the Moretti shipping warehouse down by the harbor. They didn't just find stolen inventory and fake manifests.”
“What did they find?” Christopher demanded, stepping forward.

“They found a private executive terminal registered directly under Lucas Lindqvist’s corporate alias. And he didn't just use the shell company to hide money. He used it to fund a hostile takeover of Lindqvist Enterprises’ primary commercial real estate holdings six months ago.”
