Chapter 10 - The Commander Returns

The private naval transport vehicle pulled up to the curb outside the rustic mountain diner in Lake Tahoe just as the sun began to dip below the tree line, painting the sky in shades of deep amber and bruised violet.

I sat in the back seat, dressed in my crisp Class A naval uniform, the silver bars of my rank catching the fading light through the tinted window. My boots crunched against the gravel as I stepped out, the crisp mountain air filling my lungs.

I pushed open the diner door, the little brass bell chiming overhead.

The place was nearly empty. In a corner booth near the back, illuminated by the harsh glow of a neon coffee sign, sat my father. He looked smaller than he had yesterday—his shoulders slumped, his tie loosened, and his eyes bloodshot and hollow as he stared blankly into an empty ceramic mug.

He didn't look up until my boots stopped right beside his table.

Arthur slowly raised his head. When he saw the uniform, the ribbons, and the cold, unyielding look in my eyes, all the remaining color drained from his face.

"Lauren," he whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Please. You have to call off your lawyers. David didn't mean any harm with that paperwork... it was just a misunderstanding—"

"A misunderstanding is forgetting where you parked your car, Dad," I interrupted, my voice steady, sharp, and carrying the absolute authority of a commanding officer. "Filing a forged military deed is a federal felony."

Dad shrank back against the vinyl booth, his hands trembling as he gripped the edge of the table. "I’m your father. We’re family. How can you treat me like this over a house?"

I leaned down slightly, resting my hands on the table, bringing my face level with his.

"You stopped being my family the moment you decided my life, my husband's memory, and my hard work were just currency for Olivia's comfort," I said quietly. "You thought my discipline was weakness. You thought you could take whatever you wanted."

I stood back up, adjusting my jacket.

"Enjoy your coffee, Dad," I added, turning toward the door. "The federal marshals will be here to ask you a few questions in about five minutes."
