Chapter 3 - The Midnight Summons

My phone buzzed again, breaking my concentration. It wasn't Ethan this time.

It was an incoming call from an unknown, local Tahoe landline number.

I picked it up immediately, setting the secure recorder to active.

"Commander Mitchell," a voice rasped through the speaker. It was local Sheriff Deputy Miller, a man my father had undoubtedly known for twenty years and frequently bought drinks for down at the marina. "We've got an active disturbance call coming out of your property on Vance Road. A Mr. Arthur Vance is claiming an illegal lockout and property usurpation by remote digital tampering."

"Good evening, Deputy," I replied, my tone flat, professional, and entirely unyielding.

"Commander, look, I don't know what kind of family feud you've got going on up here," Miller continued, sounding distinctly uncomfortable, "but your father is swearing up and down that you've unlawfully detained him and his family inside a residence they hold legal occupancy rights to. He's threatening to call out a state trooper unit if I don't get a locksmith to drill these smart locks right now."

I let out a slow, controlled breath through my nose. "Deputy Miller, are you familiar with California property code section 503 regarding unauthorized habitation and criminal trespass?"

There was a brief, heavy silence on the other end of the line.

"Well... of course," Miller stammered slightly. "But he's your father, Commander. He claims you gave verbal consent to transfer the deed."

"Verbal consent holds zero legal weight against a registered, single-owner deed filed with the Placer County recorder's office," I said crisply. "Furthermore, those individuals are currently inside a private residence without an active lease, without my authorization, and in direct violation of a posted legal notice of private property restriction served by my counsel less than forty-eight hours ago."

"So... you want us to clear them out?" Miller asked, caught squarely between small-town loyalty and federal jurisdiction.

"I want you to inform my father of two things," I instructed, my voice dropping an octave into a cold, commanding register. "First, that any attempt to drill my locks will be logged as intentional destruction of private federal-clearance smart infrastructure. Second, that if he and his companions do not voluntarily vacate the premises within the next two hours, my legal counsel will press full criminal trespass charges, complete with a formal audit of how they obtained access using a duplicated key."

The line crackled with static. "You're serious about this, Commander?"

May you like

"Dead serious, Deputy. The law doesn't care about family dinners."
