Chapter 4 - The Crumbling Alliance

Through the tactical camera feed, I watched the fallout of Sheriff Miller’s phone call reach my father.

Dad had answered his mobile phone near the dark, silent kitchen island. As Deputy Miller relayed my exact terms, I saw all the bluster drain out of my father's posture. The arrogant, self-satisfied patriarch who had sneered at me in uniform just twenty-four hours ago suddenly looked old, frail, and utterly bewildered.

He lowered the phone slowly, his hand trembling.

Olivia rushed over, grabbing his arm. "What did Miller say, Dad? Is he bringing the keys? Can we get these lights back on?"

Dad swallowed hard, looking around the pitch-black living room where his grandchildren were now whimpering in the dark. "He... he said she isn't backing down. He said if we don't leave voluntarily, she's pressing criminal trespass charges and auditing the key duplication."

"Auditing what?!" David exploded, throwing his hands up in disbelief. "Arthur, you told us the house was yours! You swore she wouldn't do anything!"

"She's bluffing!" Susan shrieked, her voice echoing shrilly off the walls. "She's just a girl playing soldier! Arthur, call her! Call your daughter right now and tell her you demand she unlock this house!"

Dad pulled out his phone, his fingers fumbling awkwardly against the touchscreen in the dark. He dialed my direct personal line.

It rang three times.

On the fourth ring, I answered, letting the silence stretch for a long, agonizing moment before speaking.

"You're making a mistake, Lauren," Dad’s voice hissed through the speaker, desperate now, stripped of all its earlier condescension. "I raised you. I fed you. I gave you a roof over your head when you were growing up. This is how you treat your own flesh and blood over a piece of real estate?"

"You didn't give me this villa, Dad," I replied calmly, staring at the financial ledgers displayed on my secondary monitor. "I bought this villa with the insurance payout I received after James died—money you tried to convince me to invest in one of your failing business ventures. And the moment you tried to hand it over to Olivia like a prize, you crossed a line."

"We're family!" Olivia shouted into the background, her voice cracking with fury as she snatched the phone from Dad's hand. "You're sitting down there in California while we have nowhere to go! You have a military barracks, Lauren! Why do you care about a stupid house in Tahoe?!"

"Because it's mine," I said quietly. "And because every dollar you've ever taken from me was built on lies."
