Chapter 2 - The Chairman’s Panic

Alexander didn't answer Camila. He dropped the folder onto a nearby mahogany side table, the papers scattering slightly across the polished wood, and rushed toward us. His usual cool composure was completely shattered, replaced by a frantic, sweating desperation.
"Evelyn, sweetheart," Alexander stammered, closing the distance and reaching out as if to take my hand. "You should have called. I would have sent a car to the airport, I would have cleared my schedule—"
I stepped back, avoiding his touch entirely. My voice was quiet, steady, and utterly devoid of warmth. "You were too busy, Alexander. Besides, I didn't want to interrupt your morning briefing with Camila."
Camila stood frozen, her mouth slightly open. "Mr. Montalvo... who is she?"
Alexander finally looked at her, his face flushing a mottled, furious crimson. "Shut up, Camila," he hissed, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. Then he turned back to me, desperately trying to salvage whatever control he had left. "Evelyn, let's go into my office. We can talk about this privately. Whatever you think you saw—"
"I saw my husband's secretary wearing a limited-edition white ceramic watch," I interrupted, my eyes locking onto his. "The exact same watch I asked you to purchase in Chicago for your mother's birthday last month. Only ten exist worldwide, Alexander. Did you buy two, or did you just decide my mother-in-law didn't deserve it?"
Alexander’s throat worked convulsively. He looked down at Camila’s wrist, then back to my face, realizing with sickening clarity that the trap had already sprung.
"It's not what it looks like," Alexander stammered, backing up half a step. "It was a corporate gift mix-up... a procurement error—"
"A procurement error," I repeated, a cold, humorless smile touching my lips. "That's a very creative excuse for embezzling family funds to buy luxury jewelry for your mistress."
Camila’s expression turned from shock to sheer defiance. She tossed her head, stepping right beside Alexander. "If you're going to talk to him like that, you should know how things really work around here, intern. Mr. Montalvo and I share an office, an executive schedule, and a partnership that goes far beyond whatever little compliance job you think you have."
May you like
Alexander closed his eyes in sheer agony. "Camila, for the love of God, keep your mouth shut."
