Chapter 7 - The Walk of Shame

The click of the handcuffs locking into place sounded like a gunshot in the quiet boardroom.

Alexander looked up, his eyes meeting mine across the table, filled with a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy that he had never once extended to the employees forced to climb five flights of stairs every morning.

"Evelyn... please," he choked out, his voice cracking miserably as the agents began steering him toward the double doors. "We can fix this. Ten years... you can't just let them take me out of here like a common criminal. Tell them to stop!"

"You built this exit strategy yourself, Alexander," I replied, my voice cold, steady, and devoid of any lingering emotion. "Every forged signature, every stolen cent, every cruel rule enforced in this building. You chose this path."

The agents marched him past the row of stunned executives, heading straight out into the executive suite. Camila burst into hysterical tears, sinking down onto the floor against the glass wall, clutching her white ceramic watch with both hands as if it were a lifeline.

When the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind them, the tension in the room shifted instantly.

Arthur Vance exhaled a long breath, sitting back down slowly. He looked up at me with deep, unvarnished respect. "In all my years on Wall Street, Evelyn, I have never witnessed a cleaner execution. The board is entirely at your disposal. What are your orders for the New York headquarters?"

"First," I said, walking slowly around the length of the table toward the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan, "we issue a company-wide memo restoring full elevator privileges to every single employee, from entry-level interns to senior vice presidents. No exceptions."

A murmur of approval rippled through several of the junior directors sitting near the back.

"Second," I continued, turning back to face them, "we initiate an immediate internal audit of every department head appointed during Alexander's tenure. If anyone else was complicit in masking these fraudulent transactions, they go down with him."

Arthur nodded grimly. "Consider it done. What about Ms. Reyes?"

May you like

"Escort her off the premises immediately," I said flatly. "And confiscate that watch as corporate evidence."
