Chapter 8 - The Clearing of the Desk

By late afternoon, the 68th-floor executive suite felt entirely different. The oppressive, toxic aura that Camila and Alexander had cultivated for years had been swept away, replaced by the brisk, focused energy of real professionals who actually understood the meaning of hard work.

I stood in the center of Alexander’s former corner office. Two packing boxes sat open on the mahogany desk.

The security team had already stripped the walls of his vanity plaques and custom portraits. The executive assistant desk outside was empty; Camila had been quietly escorted out through the service lobby thirty minutes prior, her designer handbag searched and her security pass permanently deactivated.

I picked up a framed photograph of Alexander and me from our wedding day, smiling awkwardly under a tent in Martha’s Vineyard. I stared at it for a long, quiet moment, wondering how a man could spend a decade side-by-side with someone and remain a complete stranger. With a swift, decisive motion, I tossed the frame face-down into the recycling bin.

The private door behind the desk clicked open. Arthur Vance stepped inside, holding a sleek black tablet.

"Evelyn, the federal magistrate just signed off on the emergency asset seizure warrants for all of Alexander's secondary properties, including the Weston estate," Arthur said, handing me the tablet. "In addition, our forensic accountants uncovered a hidden offshore trust he set up last year under a shell corporation named Vance & Co. Holdings."

I paused, reading the screen. "Vance & Co.? As in Fiona and Marcus Vance?"

Arthur raised an eyebrow. "You know them?"

"Unfortunately," I said, a cold realization dawning on me. "Marcus Vance is my brother-in-law, and Fiona is his sister. They've been draining family and corporate assets from multiple angles."

"Well, they won't be draining anything else," Arthur said smoothly. "Our legal team has already frozen every bank account, line of credit, and commercial asset tied to their name across the tristate area. They're entirely bankrupt as of twenty minutes ago."

My phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out and looked at the screen.
