Chapter 10 - The Unfinished Chapter

Three days later, I was discharged from the hospital.

The morning air was crisp and sharp as my mother wheeled me out through the automatic glass doors of the lobby, where our car was waiting at the curb. My children were sitting in the backseat, holding a handmade welcome-home banner that read: WE LOVE YOU, MOM!

When I opened the car door and saw their bright, smiling faces, a wave of profound, overwhelming peace washed over me. The pain in my side was a dull reminder of what I had survived, but my chest felt lighter than it had in a decade.

We drove past the sprawling office complex where Daniel’s business was currently undergoing a comprehensive federal forensic audit. Through the car window, I saw two federal agents carrying cardboard boxes of documents out of the glass-paneled lobby, loading them into the back of an unmarked van.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket.

I pulled it out and saw an unknown, restricted number flashing on the screen.

For a second, I considered ignoring it. But curiosity won out, and I swiped to answer, holding the phone to my ear as our car merged onto the highway toward home.

"Mrs. Whitaker?" a crisp, unfamiliar voice asked on the other end.

"Speaking."

"This is Special Agent Vance with the Department of Justice, Financial Crimes Task Force. We’re currently executing the asset forfeiture warrants on your husband’s primary corporate holding accounts. However, during our search of the main server room this morning, we recovered an encrypted digital drive labeled with your maiden name."

I frowned, looking out the window at the passing trees. "My maiden name? What kind of drive?"

"It appears to be a secure digital ledger predating your marriage by several years," the agent replied, his tone growing cautious. "It contains detailed financial records and property deeds belonging to your late father's estate—properties and accounts that were liquidated and absorbed into Vanguard Capital twenty years ago under a power of attorney signed by..."

The agent paused for a fraction of a second.

"...signed by your mother-in-law, Patricia Whitaker."
