Chapter 2 - The Contents of the Box

Before Jessica could lunge across the room and claw my eyes out, a harried head nurse rushed through the doorway, planting herself firmly between us.

"Ma'am, you need to keep your voice down. This is a recovery ward," the nurse warned, though her eyes darted nervously between Jessica's frantic expression and my absolute calm.

Jessica was breathing heavily, her chest heaving under her silk blouse. "She’s insane! She just sent him a threat! A sick, twisted threat!"

"I sent my husband a gift," I corrected smoothly, looking past Jessica toward Daniel’s room down the hall. "After all, he just received a very precious donation from me. It's only right that he receives the paperwork that goes along with it."

"Paperwork?" Jessica sneered, though the color was rapidly draining from her face. "You sent him a divorce petition wrapped in a bow. And... and a bill."

"Not just a bill," I said softly, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make her squirm.

Inside the beautiful mahogany box my mother had retrieved from our basement was not a divorce lawyer's letter—not yet. It was something far more destructive. It was the complete, unredacted financial portfolio of our household, detailing every single debt, every corporate loan Daniel had taken out under my name, and the title deeds to our house, which had quietly been transferred into a revocable trust three weeks before his surgery.

A trust that listed me as the sole primary beneficiary, with an immediate default clause triggered in the event of major asset reallocation or marital abandonment.

In plain English: Daniel had thought he was securing his future by using my kidney and dumping me for his rich girlfriend. Instead, he had just signed away the house, his car, and his business accounts to a woman who now owned every single legal leverage point in his life.

Jessica didn't know the full financial details yet, but she knew enough to recognize financial ruin when she saw it.

"You can't do that," Jessica stammered, her voice dropping an octave as panic finally replaced her arrogance. "Daniel's business is booming. We have plans—"

"Had plans," I corrected, leaning back against my pillows. "Past tense, Jessica. Now go back down the hall and hold his hand. You're going to need to comfort him when he realizes that the kidney I gave him is the only thing he owns that isn't currently tied up in court-ordered asset freezing."

Before she could answer, a loud, choking crash echoed from Daniel’s room, followed by the sound of medical monitors flat-lining into a continuous, high-pitched beep.
