Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

I stepped through the heavy oak rear doors of the courtroom into the quiet, sunlit corridor of the federal building. The air conditioning hummed softly, washing away the suffocating tension of the courtroom. I let out a long, slow breath, rolling my shoulders to release the tight knot of adrenaline that had coiled in my spine during testimony.

Ten years.

Ten years of running into old shipmates who looked at me with polite confusion because they had heard through naval gossip channels that I had "washed out under disciplinary review." Ten years of watching my professional achievements locked behind security clearances I had to fight twice as hard to maintain because of the shadow cast by a forged DD-214 floating in federal background databases.

And all of it orchestrated by a brother who couldn't bear the thought of sharing a pedestal with a sister who wore a real uniform instead of a custom-tailored Italian suit.

Footsteps echoed sharply down the marble hallway behind me.

"Master Chief."

I turned around. Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance was walking toward me, carrying a leather folio under his arm, a respectful, appreciative look on his face.

"Brilliant testimony," Vance said as he stopped a few feet away. "You completely dismantled their primary defense strategy before the recess even began."

"I just testified to the facts, Mr. Vance," I replied, smoothing my skirt. "The digital footprint did the heavy lifting."

"True," Vance chuckled softly. "Though having a witness who can effortlessly cross-reference NCIS protocols while staring down a high-priced corporate defense team certainly makes a prosecutor's life easier. How are you holding up? I know facing your family in a federal proceeding isn't exactly standard procedure."

"I stopped considering them family the day they signed the guarantor forms for a company using my stolen identity," I said, my tone flat and uncompromising.

Vance nodded slowly, his expression sobering. "Well, don't relax just yet. The defense is about to call their first witness after the recess. And based on the emergency motion filed twenty minutes ago by Luke’s counsel, they're going to try a desperate pivot."

"What kind of pivot?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.

"They're going to claim that you were an active, consenting silent partner in Vance Shield Recovery during your early deployments," Vance said quietly. "They’ve fabricated a paper trail of cash withdrawals from 2018 attempting to show that you accepted dividends from the company while still on active duty—which, if true, would constitute a serious violation of military ethics and federal conflict-of-interest statutes."

A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of my lips. "Let them try. In 2018, I was deployed aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt in the Arabian Gulf with zero outside communication access for six straight months. Every financial transaction bearing my name from that window has a cryptographic timestamp pointing straight back to a dynamic IP address leased by Luke’s corporate subsidiary in Virginia."

Vance raised an eyebrow, a slow, approving grin spreading across his face. "You anticipated their entire counter-narrative, didn't you?"

"When you spend ten years fighting a ghost your brother invented," I said softly, "you learn how to check every single lock on the door."

Before Vance could reply, the heavy oak doors of the courtroom swung open behind us.

Luke stepped out into the corridor, his defense attorney trailing closely behind him. When Luke saw me standing there with Vance, his face twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated venom. He discarded the polished, corporate facade entirely, his eyes burning with the bitter, desperate rage of a cornered animal.
