Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Debt

The fluorescent lights of the prosecutor's conference room buzzed with a low, irritating hum that grated against my nerves. Across the long oak table sat Thomas Vance and a senior forensic accountant from the Department of Justice, surrounded by stacks of encrypted hard drives, bank ledgers, and property deeds bearing my family’s name.

"The Cayman accounts are real," the accountant said, sliding a certified ledger across the table toward Vance. "Miller wasn't bluffing. Over eight million in federal relief funds was siphoned through shell corporations into offshore holdings controlled entirely by Luke—and, notably, co-signed by Bernard Sterling as corporate secretary."

My stomach tightened. "My father co-signed?"

"As a silent director of Vance Shield Recovery's parent holding," Vance confirmed, leaning back in his chair and rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Which means your parents aren't just collateral damage in this investigation, Master Chief. Legally speaking, they are co-conspirators in wire fraud and asset concealment."

The weight of those words settled heavily over the room. For a decade, I had watched my parents enable Luke’s cruelty, funding his ambitions while treating my service, my sacrifice, and my absence like a family embarrassment. They had chosen his version of reality because it flattered their vanity. But the law didn't care about family favoritism.

"What happens to the estate?" I asked quietly.

"Everything is subject to federal asset forfeiture," Vance replied. "The house in Greenwich, the investment portfolios, the vehicles, the corporate accounts. By the end of the week, the Sterling family will be legally and financially bankrupt."

My phone buzzed against the table. I glanced down at the screen. It was an unknown local number, followed by a voicemail notification. Without thinking, I tapped the screen and hit play.

"Chloe?"

My mother’s voice trembled through the tiny speaker, sounding fragile, thin, and impossibly old.

"Chloe, please... if you're getting this, call us back. Your father... your father had a cardiac episode in the lobby holding area. We're at St. Jude's Memorial. The lawyers won't answer our calls, and Luke is being held without bail. Please... we have nowhere else to turn."

The voicemail cut off with a sharp, digital click.

I stared at the glowing screen for three long seconds. The anger that had sustained me through years of exile, slander, and betrayal flared up, hot and sharp, demanding vindication. They had made their bed. They had chosen the golden son, ignored the forged documents, and locked me out of their lives without a second thought.

"Master Chief?" Vance asked gently, noticing the change in my expression. "Everything alright?"

"My father is in the hospital," I said, standing up and smoothing my uniform jacket. "Cardiac episode."

Vance stood up immediately. "Do you need a recess? We can postpone the afternoon deposition review—"

"No," I interrupted, my voice steady and cold. "Let's finish reviewing the offshore ledgers. Then I have a hospital to visit."
