Chapter 6 - The Weight of a Deal

The heavy steel elevator doors slid shut with a metallic finality that echoed down the marble hallway like a gavel strike.
Luke stood paralyzed, his eyes fixed on the chief financial officer of Vance Shield Recovery, who had just raised his hand to cut a deal with Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Vance. The slick, untouchable composure Luke had cultivated over a decade of high-stakes corporate maneuvering dissolved into a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. His breath hitched, his chest rising and falling in shallow, frantic gasps as federal agents closed the distance, their tactical windbreakers rustling against the pristine marble.
"Wait," Luke choked out, his voice cracking as he lunged forward, ignoring the armed marshals. "Don't listen to him! He’s a rogue employee! He’s trying to shift liability to protect his own skin!"
"Mr. Sterling, step back or you will be restrained," one of the federal agents warned, placing a firm hand on the butt of his sidearm.
Thomas Vance didn't even look at Luke. He turned his attention entirely to the CFO, offering a nod that signaled an immediate acceptance of terms. "Counselor," Vance said to a junior prosecutor, "take Mr. Miller down to the secure intake room on the third floor. Log every single cryptographic key and asset ledger he surrenders. Let's get it on the record before the defense files another emergency injunction."
"You can't do this!" Luke screamed, his face flushing a dark, mottled crimson as two federal agents stepped neatly into his path, blocking his route to the elevators. "My attorneys haven't even reviewed these filings! This is an illegal ambush!"
"It's called a cooperating witness, Mr. Sterling," I said, stepping past Vance and looking directly into my brother's terrified eyes. "You taught me yourself that when a ship starts taking on water, the smartest rats don't wait for permission to jump."
Luke spun around, his expression twisting into a mask of pure venom. He looked past me, his eyes landing on our mother, who was still clinging blindly to Dad's arm, weeping silently as the absolute scale of her golden son's fraud came crashing down around her.
"Mom!" Luke cried out, his voice dropping into a desperate, pleading register that he had used a thousand times to get out of trouble when we were kids. "Mom, tell her! Tell them to stop this! You know I didn't mean—you know I worked hard for everything we have!"
Mom didn't move. She didn't reach out to him. Her gaze remained fixed on the floor, the horrifying realization finally breaking through her lifetime of willful blindness. For ten years, she had traded her daughter's dignity for the illusion of her son's perfection. Now, the bill had arrived, and there was nothing left to pay with.
Dad slowly lowered his head, his shoulders slumping under an invisible weight. He didn't look at Luke. He didn't look at me. He just stood there in the middle of a federal corridor, an aging man whose entire legacy had just been unmasked as a criminal enterprise.
"Take him," Vance ordered the marshals.

Before Luke could launch into another frantic tirade, two federal officers stepped forward, gently but firmly securing his arms. As they turned him toward the service elevators to process the new indictments, Luke looked back over his shoulder one last time.
His eyes locked onto mine, burning with a cold, terrifying promise of retaliation. But as the steel doors closed shut between us, I knew it wasn't a threat anymore. It was the final, desperate whine of a cornered man who had finally run out of lies.
