Chapter 2 - The Clearing of a Desk

The elevator ride down to the third floor felt like falling through a vacuum.

Emily stood in the far corner of the mahogany-paneled car, her cardboard box clutched tightly against her chest. Inside it sat three years of corporate ghosts: a ceramic mug with a chipped handle, a framed photograph of her mother sitting by the kitchen window in Maine, two blue ballpoint pens, and a stack of spiral-bound notebooks filled with columns of figures, reconciliation notes, and the dark, unyielding arithmetic of embezzlement.

Adrien Moretti stood beside her, his hands clasped behind his back, staring at the digital floor indicator as the numbers ticked downward in amber light.

Nobody else had dared to step into the elevator with them. On the open-plan trading and operations floor outside, forty people had pretended to be intensely occupied with their dual-monitor setups, though forty pairs of eyes had tracked Emily and the tall, silent billionaire every step of the way.

"You didn't have to do that," Emily said, her voice breaking the heavy stillness of the car.

Adrien didn't turn his head. "Do what?"

"You didn't have to clear the floor," she said, looking at his profile. "Caldwell has been running the North American operations division for six years. The board trusts him. The shareholders think he's a golden boy."

"Caldwell is a middle-manager with a taste for falsified balance sheets and petty intimidation," Adrien replied smoothly, his tone as casual as if he were discussing the weather. "And the board answers to the majority shareholder."

Emily swallowed, her grip tightening on the cardboard box. "Which is you."

"Which is me," Adrien agreed. The elevator chimed softly, and the doors slid open to reveal the quiet, sterile expanse of the operations wing. "And I don't pay people to manufacture fake recovery contracts or use leather straps in my conference rooms."

He stepped out into the hallway, pausing to look back over his shoulder. "Are you coming, Miss Carter, or are you planning to stand in that box for the rest of the afternoon?"

Emily blinked, startled, before hurrying after him. Her mind raced, trying to catch up with the shifting tectonic plates of her life. Twenty minutes ago, she was just another faceless analyst hiding behind spreadsheets, terrified of losing her rent-controlled apartment. Now, she was walking side-by-side with the most powerful investor on Wall Street, carrying the evidence of a multi-million-dollar fraud in her arms.

As they approached her row of desks, a pale, trembling woman with short brown hair stepped out from the accounting pool. It was Rachel. Her eyes were wide, darting nervously between Adrien Moretti and Emily.

"Emily," Rachel whispered, her voice shaking. "God... are you okay? We heard... everyone heard about the board room..."

Emily stopped, opening her mouth to offer a reassuring word, but Adrien cut her off before she could speak.

"Miss Carter is no longer with the operations analysis pool," Adrien said, his voice cutting through the open office with chilling precision. "She has been reassigned."

May you like

Rachel shrank back as if she had been physically touched, nodding frantically. "Yes, Mr. Moretti. Of course."

Adrien turned to Emily, his dark eyes fixing on hers. "Bring your notebooks. My car is waiting in the basement garage."
