Chapter 4 - The Diverted Route

The Maybach didn't head toward Adrien Moretti’s private residential tower on Central Park West.

Instead, the partition slid down halfway, and the driver’s voice cut through the cabin with urgent precision. "Mr. Moretti, we've got a tail. Two black Tahoes picked us up at the Triborough Bridge interchange. They're maintaining a two-car buffer, but the plates are unregistered municipal washouts."

Adrien didn't flinch. He didn't even look out the rear window. His eyes remained fixed on Emily, who had instinctively clutched her cardboard box tighter against her chest.

"Caldwell’s cleanup crew," Emily whispered, the realization hitting her like a physical blow. "If he’s being forced out of the company, he’s going to scrub the physical servers before the federal receivers take over tonight. He knows my notebooks have the master keys to his entire operation."

"Caldwell doesn't have the imagination to coordinate an active surveillance tail," Adrien said flatly, his voice cool and steady. "Which means someone else is backing him. Someone with deep pockets and a lot more to lose than a middle-management salary."

"Who?" Emily asked.

"We're about to find out," Adrien replied. He tapped a button on the armrest, sliding the partition completely down. "Miller, take the next exit toward the financial district. Let's see who's in such a hurry to meet us."

"Mr. Moretti, that's a dead-end service road behind the old maritime docks," the driver warned.

"I know," Adrien said. "Do it."

The heavy car surged forward, its twin-turbo engine roaring as it whipped across three lanes of traffic, taking the downtown off-ramp with tires squealing against the asphalt. Emily braced herself against the door, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs. The adrenaline she had kept suppressed all morning suddenly flooded her system, hot and sharp.

Behind them, the two black Tahoes accelerated instantly, closing the distance with terrifying coordination.

"You're walking into a trap," Emily said, looking at Adrien with sudden, urgent disbelief. "If they have municipal washouts, they have local law enforcement or corporate security details on their payroll. We're walking right into an ambush!"

"Miss Carter," Adrien said, turning his head to look her dead in the eye, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable calm that defied the screeching tires outside. "You spent three years hiding behind a desk because you were afraid of making noise. You told the board chairman the truth this morning, and you refused to put your hand out for a strap." He reached across the console, his fingers brushing gently against her bruised wrist for a fraction of a second before he pulled back. "Do you really think I built Aethelgard Holdings by running away from men in Tahoes?"

The Maybach slammed to a halt at the end of the deserted maritime service road, boxing itself in against a towering chain-link fence overlooking the grey, choppy waters of the East River.

Before the brake lights had even faded, the two black Tahoes screeched to a halt behind them, blocking the narrow exit completely. Eight men in dark tactical windbreakers stepped out of the vehicles, their faces obscured by shadows, moving with military precision toward the Maybach.
