Chapter 5 - The Glass House

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. She gripped her cardboard box, her knuckles white, her eyes locked on the approaching figures.

"Stay in the car," Adrien ordered, his voice brooking no argument.

Before she could protest, Adrien pressed a release button and pushed his door open, stepping out onto the wet asphalt of the deserted dock.

The wind off the East River whipped his dark suit jacket around his shoulders as he stood unhurriedly beside the Maybach, his hands sliding casually into his trouser pockets. The lead man in the tactical windbreaker—tall, broad-shouldered, with a jagged scar running down his right jawline—stopped three paces away from him.

"Mr. Moretti," the man said, his voice grating and flat. "Turn the car around. Hand over the girl and the box. This isn't your fight."

Emily watched through the tinted rear window, her heart pounding in her ears. She recognized the face from a background compliance file she had reviewed two weeks ago. It wasn't Caldwell’s man. It was Marcus Vance—the head of Vance Shield Recovery’s private security wing.

Adrien didn't move an inch. He tilted his head slightly, studying Vance with the detached mildness of a professor examining an unexceptional student.

"Vance," Adrien murmured, tasting the name. "I wondered when your masters in Washington would send someone to clean up the mess Caldwell started."

"You're holding evidence that belongs to federal contractors," Vance snarled, taking a threatening step forward, his hand hovering near his tactical belt. "Hand it over, Moretti, or we'll tear this car apart piece by piece."

Adrien let out a soft, low chuckle—a sound entirely devoid of humor. He raised his right hand lazily and snapped his fingers twice.

From the shadows behind the rusted shipping containers lining the dock, the distinctive, unmistakable clack-clack of automatic rifle bolts echoing in unison shattered the silence.

Vance froze mid-step.

Instantly, red laser sights flickered to life across the chests of every single man in tactical gear, painting them like targets on a firing range. From the upper catwalks of the rusted maritime warehouse above, six armed men in unmarked tactical gear looked down over the railing, their weapons trained squarely on Vance’s crew.

"You think you're the only ones who know how to coordinate a vehicle tail?" Adrien asked smoothly, taking a slow step toward Vance. "You brought two Tahoes to a private harbor that my company acquired three years ago. Every camera, every gate, and every exit within a two-mile radius belongs to me."

Vance’s face hardened, sweat beading on his forehead as he realized the trap had been sprung in reverse.

Adrien stopped two feet from Vance, his dark eyes flashing with cold fury. "Tell the men who sent you that if they ever look at Miss Carter—or my company—again, I won't just audit their accounts. I'll strip them down to the bare dirt and salt the earth behind them."

He turned his back on Vance with casual contempt, walking back toward the Maybach. He pulled open the rear door and slid into the leather seat beside Emily, slamming the heavy door shut against the wind.

"Miller," Adrien said through the partition, his voice entirely even. "Take us home."

The Maybach’s engine roared to life, spinning around on the asphalt as the armed men in the shadows parted to let them through. Emily sat frozen in the backseat, staring at Adrien with wide, disbelieving eyes.

Adrien picked up his encrypted tablet, sliding his thumb across the screen as if nothing had happened at all. He didn't look up, but he spoke quietly without turning his head.

"Well, Miss Carter," Adrien said softly. "Are you still planning to be invisible, or are you ready to help me dismantle an empire?"
