Chapter 10 - Dawn over the Skyline

The silence that followed their departure felt lighter, as if a heavy fog had finally lifted from the penthouse.
Thomas let out a long, ragged sigh, lowering himself carefully into one of the leather armchairs near the fireplace. Julian locked the briefcase securely and set it down on the mahogany desk, wiping a layer of sweat from his forehead.
"Well," Julian muttered, offering a weak, incredulous smile. "That certainly escalates our timeline for Monday morning."
"Arthur always liked a dramatic exit," I said softly, walking over to the tall glass windows that overlooked the glittering expanse of the Chicago skyline. The first pale streaks of dawn were beginning to break across the eastern horizon, painting the clouds in shades of soft gold and bruised violet.
I touched the small gold band on my left ring finger—the ring Arthur had slid onto my hand in front of a small, quiet justice of the peace two years ago. People had laughed at us. They had called it a marriage of convenience, an old man's folly, a young woman's scam. But standing here now, looking out over the city he had built and the legacy he had entrusted to my care, I knew it had been the most honest thing either of us had ever done.
"What do we do next, Clara?" Julian asked, walking up to stand beside me at the window. "The kids are going to retaliate with everything they have left."
I turned away from the glass, looking down at the heavy brass key still resting in my palm.

"We don't retaliate, Julian," I said, a quiet strength settling into my bones. "We open the rest of the vault, we hand the records over to the federal investigators as Arthur wished, and then... we use the remaining funds to endow a permanent residency wing at Briarwood Care so nobody else ever has to grow old feeling invisible."
Julian stared at me for a long moment, a slow, genuine smile spreading across his face. Then, before he could answer, his cell phone buzzed loudly on the desk, shattering the morning peace with an urgent, persistent ring.
