Chapter 7 - The Confrontation in the Study

Victoria stopped dead in her tracks upon seeing us. Her eyes darted from Julian—who was frantically slipping the ledger and cassette into his leather briefcase—to the open door of the grandfather clock and me standing calmly beside it.

A triumphant, vicious smile spread across her face.

"Well, well," Victoria purred, stepping fully into the study with her arms crossed over her tailored coat. Behind her, Charles and Richard flanked the doorway like two guard dogs smelling blood. "Breaking and entering into your own late husband's home after hours. I knew you were desperate, you old fraud, but committing a felony on top of it? That’s impressive."

"We aren't breaking in, Victoria," I said, straightening my cardigan and holding my head high as I stepped away from the clock. "I am legally the co-owner of this residence, and Julian is the estate's executing attorney. We have every right to be here."

"Not for much longer," Richard snapped, pushing past his sister and pointing a furious finger at me. "The court magistrate just issued an emergency injunction two hours ago freezing every asset, every key, and every document associated with this trust. You have no legal standing, Clara. You're trespassing."

Julian zipped his briefcase shut with a sharp, definitive sound that echoed loudly in the room. He stepped forward, shielding me slightly. "The injunction hasn't been served to my firm, Richard, which means it carries no legal weight until Monday morning. Furthermore, anything retrieved from this estate prior to the formal filing remains under executive privilege."

"Give me that briefcase, Julian," Charles demanded, lunging forward with a heavy hand outstretched toward Julian's arm.

"Touch me, Charles, and you'll be facing felony assault charges before you even reach the probate court," Julian warned coldly, stepping back out of his reach.

Victoria's face twisted into an ugly snarl. She looked past Julian, fixing her venomous gaze entirely on me. "You think you won, don't you? You think you crawled out of a state-funded nursing home bed and managed to steal forty years of my family's legacy with a cheap courthouse wedding. But you forgot one simple reality, Clara: paper can be burned, memories can be buried, and people who don't belong in our world have a habit of disappearing."

The threat hung in the air, thick and menacing, casting a cold chill over the luxurious room.
