Chapter 8 - The Hidden Vault

I didn't flinch under Victoria's stare. Instead, a faint, cold smile touched the corners of my mouth—a smile born from remembering the quiet afternoons I spent playing chess with Arthur while he described every single trap he had laid for his children.
"You always thought your father was weak, Victoria," I said softly, my voice cutting cleanly through her anger. "You thought because he grew quiet in his old age, he had lost his teeth. But Arthur spent the last five years of his life watching you, listening to you, and documenting every single ruthless decision you made."
"Shut your mouth!" Victoria shrieked, losing her composure entirely as she took a step toward me.
"If you touch her, Victoria, you'll never see a single cent of that trust," Julian interjected smoothly, unlatching his briefcase just enough to reveal the corner of the microcassette recorder. "This tape contains Arthur's voice detailing the exact corporate restructuring of 1984. Do you know what happens when a federal judge hears how Vance Logistics was originally funded? The entire estate gets seized by the government. You'll inherit nothing but a prison cell."
Charles and Richard froze. The color drained from Charles' face as he looked nervously at his sister. Even Victoria hesitated, her hand hovering in mid-air as the terrifying reality of what was on that tape finally sank in.
"You're bluffing," Victoria whispered, though her voice lacked its earlier conviction. "There is no tape. Father didn't know anything about the 1984 restructuring; he ran this company cleanly!"
"He built it cleanly, yes," a new voice echoed from the dark shadows of the private hallway behind them. "But he kept the records of who tried to steal it from him."
We all turned. Stepping out from the shadows of the corridor was an elderly man leaning heavily on a carved wooden cane. His hair was completely white, his face etched with deep lines of age, but his eyes were sharp and piercing.
Julian gasped. "Good God... Thomas?"
Victoria and her brothers spun around, utter confusion and shock washing over their faces. "Who the hell are you?" Richard demanded.
The old man ignored Richard entirely, limping slowly into the study until he stood directly beside me. He looked at Victoria with a profound, heavy disappointment.

"I was Arthur's chief financial officer forty years ago," Thomas said slowly, his voice raspy but clear. "And I'm the one who helped him hide the physical safe behind the library wall—the one your mother tried to destroy the night she passed away."
