Chapter 2 - The Sterling Standard

Isaac recovered his footing first, stepping in front of me with a sudden surge of defensive bluster, trying to reclaim the room. "Hold on right there! You don't just walk into my home uninvited. Do you know who I am? Vance Construction builds half the commercial high-rises in this state—"
Julian, my second-oldest brother and top-tier criminal defense attorney, stepped forward, adjusting his silver-rimmed glasses with an infuriatingly calm smile. "Vance Construction," Julian repeated, tasting the words as if they were foul. "Funny you should mention that, Isaac. I spent the last twenty minutes reviewing your municipal zoning permits, environmental impact filings, and subcontractor safety logs. Do you know what happens when a forensic audit hits a company built entirely on bribery and cutting corners? It doesn't collapse. It implodes."
Marcus, the forensic accountant of the family, stepped up beside Julian, tapping the screen of a secure tablet. "As of three minutes ago, every corporate account, subsidiary holding, and offshore shell company associated with Vance Construction has been frozen by federal injunction due to suspected racketeering and financial fraud. Your payroll bounced at midnight, Isaac. Your employees aren't working for you tomorrow morning."
Caleb, the intelligence specialist, didn't say a word. He simply raised his phone, and across the room, the wall-mounted security monitors flickered, replacing the Vance corporate logo with live, unredacted bank records, text logs between Isaac and Clover, and high-definition surveillance footage of bribes being handed to city inspectors.
Clover let out a sharp gasp, dropping her champagne flute. It shattered against the marble floor, the sharp sound cutting through the stunned silence. "This... this is illegal! You can't do this!"
Caleb looked at her with utter indifference. "We didn't break any laws, Ms. Vance-wannabe. We just exposed the ones you thought you were smart enough to hide."
Arthur Vance lunged forward, his face purple with rage. "You arrogant little punks! I'll ruin you! I'll have my lawyers—"
"Your lawyers resigned ten minutes ago, Arthur," Julian interrupted smoothly. "Conflict of interest. Turns out representing a sinking ship isn't great for a law firm's reputation."
Isaac spun around to face me, his eyes wide with a mix of disbelief and sheer terror. He finally realized who I was—not the quiet, submissive orphan girl he thought he had married and broken, but the youngest sister of an empire that controlled information, law, logistics, and power across the globe.
"Flora," Isaac whispered, his voice cracking as he reached out a trembling hand toward my arm. "Flora, honey, listen to me. It was a mistake. A joke. The party... Clover meant nothing. We can fix this—"

Before his fingers could graze my sleeve, Noah stepped directly between us, his shoulder checking Isaac hard enough to send the billionaire stumbling backward into the champagne tower. Crystal glassware crashed to the floor in a cascade of ice and sparkling wine.
"Don't ever touch her again," Noah said, his voice dropping into a chilling, lethal register that made every guest in the room hold their breath.
