Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Power

The document in my hands wasn't a standard divorce petition. It was a complete, court-ready forfeiture and transfer of ownership deed assigning 100% of Vance Construction's remaining un-seized corporate equity, real estate holdings, and subsidiary assets directly to a private holding company named Sterling-Vance Holdings, LLC—registered solely in my name.
"What is this?" I breathed, looking up from the pages in stunned disbelief. "Noah, I don't want their company. I don't want anything tied to Isaac or his family."
"It's not about wanting them, Flora," Julian explained, pulling up a chair and leaning forward, his lawyer's mind fully engaged. "When Arthur and Isaac engaged in systematic fraud and cartel laundering, they funneled a substantial portion of the illicit funds through shell corporations under your married name—without your knowledge, legally speaking, but your signature was forged on several backend corporate resolutions to act as a silent majority shareholder."
My stomach flipped. "They used me as a fall guy?"
"Exactly," Marcus nodded grimly. "If the federal prosecutors had moved forward before we intercepted their servers, you would have been named as a co-conspirator in a multi-million-dollar federal indictment. They were setting you up to take the fall if the empire ever collapsed."
The full horror of what Isaac and his family had planned for me washed over me in a cold wave. The physical abuse, the public humiliation at the party, the constant belittling—it wasn't just a toxic marriage. It was a calculated, long-term insurance policy. If the federal authorities ever closed in on their criminal enterprise, they intended to pin the blame on quiet, invisible Flora Sterling.
"Instead," Julian continued, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute triumph, "because we struck first and seized their encrypted servers, we flipped the script. We legally severed your liability, proved the forgery of your signature using forensic handwriting analysis, and forced the corporate board to sign over complete controlling equity to you as restitution for emotional distress and financial fraud."
I stared at the document, the weight of the paper suddenly feeling like a scepter of ultimate power. The company that had once been used as a weapon to crush me was now legally mine.
"So," Leo said with a broad, confident grin, leaning against the doorframe. "You're no longer just Flora Sterling. You're the majority owner and chairwoman of the largest construction and real estate portfolio in the Midwest."

Before I could fully process the reality of my new position, my phone buzzed violently on the table. It wasn't a prison burner line this time. It was an incoming call from an unlisted, high-priority secure line routed directly through Caleb's intelligence dashboard.
Caleb glanced at his screen, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise. "Well, that didn't take long. It's Arthur Vance's primary defense counsel. He wants to talk settlement."
