Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Documents

The autumn wind whipped down Richard’s pristine, manicured suburban street, but the chill in the air had nothing to do with the weather.
I cut the engine of my sedan and pushed the door open, my sneakers crunching against the asphalt as I stepped out into the chaos. Two patrol cars sat idling behind Richard’s luxury European SUV, their red and blue emergency lights flashing silent, rhythmic pulses across the sprawling brick facade of the $2 million house.
Richard was red-faced, jabbing a finger toward the front lawn while shouting at a tall patrol officer who looked entirely unimpressed. Melissa was sitting on the edge of the limestone front steps, her face buried in her hands, weeping with a shrill, theatrical desperation that grated against the morning quiet.
And standing near the wrought-iron pool gate, entirely detached from the drama, was my dad.
He wore his faded denim work shirt, sleeves rolled up to reveal his weathered forearms, leaning against the fence post with the easy posture of a man waiting for a bus. Beside him stood the elderly woman with the thick manila folder clutched to her chest like a shield.
When she walked toward my car and spoke those chilling words about the papers Richard and Melissa had signed, the air felt like it had been sucked entirely from my lungs.
"What... what is this?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper as I stared at the yellowed corporate seal stamped across the top document in her folder.
The elderly woman adjusted her wire-rimmed glasses, her eyes sharp and unforgiving. "My name is Beatrice Vance. And that pool out back isn't just leaking water, young lady. It's leaking a thirty-year-old secret that your boss and his lovely wife thought they buried deep enough to forget."

Before I could ask another question, Richard broke away from the police officer and stormed across the lawn toward us.
