Chapter 2 - The Interruption at the Gate

"Get away from her!" Richard barked, his voice cracking with panic as he closed the distance. He didn't look like the polished, untouchable executive who routinely humiliated me in Monday morning status meetings; he looked like a cornered animal caught in the headlights.
Beatrice didn't flinch. She simply turned her head, fixing Richard with a gaze so intensely cold that he actually stumbled to a halt a yard away.
"Lower your voice, Richard," Beatrice said, her tone level and razor-sharp. "Bullying your employees in the office is one thing. Screaming at witnesses in front of local law enforcement is quite another."
"This woman is a trespasser!" Richard shouted, his finger pointing wildly at Beatrice before shifting to my dad. "And that fraud artist and his daughter conspired to harass my family! They broke into private property—"
"Mr. Reynolds," one of the patrol officers interrupted, walking over with a heavy hand resting on his utility belt. "Nobody broke into anything. This gentleman was contracted to repair your pool, and during the excavation around the main drain line, he uncovered a structural anomaly that happened to match an active county property injunction filed back in 1994."
Richard swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently. "An old... an old zoning dispute. It was settled years ago."
"It was never settled, Richard," Beatrice countered, flipping a page in her folder to reveal a handwritten deed stamped by the municipal court. "Because the property wasn't yours to build on in the first place. The land under that luxury pool—and half the footprint of this house—legally belongs to the estate of my late brother."
I looked over at Dad. He pushed off the fence post, stepping up beside me and offering a faint, reassuring smile.
May you like
"You didn't just need new pipes, Richard," Dad said quietly, his voice cutting through the morning air. "You needed a complete excavation. And when you dig down six feet near an illegal drainage diversion, you tend to unearth things people tried to concrete over."
