Chapter 5 - The Secret Below

I walked slowly to the edge of the excavated trench and looked down.

A heavy-duty aluminum ladder disappeared into the subterranean darkness, illuminated by a work light dangling from an extension cord. A faint, damp smell of old concrete and stagnant water drifted up from the depths.

"We pumped out most of the standing water yesterday evening," Dad explained, walking up beside me and handing me a high-powered flashlight. "Found an old steel filing cabinet down there, sealed shut with waterproof lining. State property stamps all over it."

Beatrice stepped up to the edge, her expression turning somber as she peered into the dark void. "That cabinet contains the original architectural schematics of this entire district—including the proof that Richard's corporate shell company illegally acquired this land by bypassing probate court while my brother was in the hospital."

Richard lunged forward, suddenly losing whatever composure he had left. "You can't prove that! That vault is private property!"

"It's municipal easement property, Mr. Reynolds," the senior officer warned, stepping firmly between Richard and the edge of the pit. "One more step and I'll add obstruction of justice to your charges."

Melissa slumped against a patio lounger, her face buried in her hands, completely defeated.

I turned away from the hole, looking at my dad. The man who had spent thirty years fixing other people's messes, who had stood quietly while my boss's wife mocked him and treated him like hired help, had systematically dismantled an empire with a wrench, a clipboard, and a clever legal trap.

Dad caught my eye, gave me a slow, quiet wink, and tossed his work gloves onto the patio table.

"Well," Dad said, wiping his hands on a rag. "The pump is installed, the pipes are cleared, and the water is running clean. But I'm afraid your warranty is officially voided, Richard."

Before Richard could answer, a loud, heavy rumbling echoed from down the street as two county environmental trucks turned the corner and headed straight up the driveway.
