Chapter 10 - The Unseen Enemy

The morning sun filtered through the high, arched windows of the Alfieri estate library, casting long golden bars across the Persian rugs and the leather-bound volumes that lined the walls. But there was no warmth in the room.
Adeline sat at the massive oak desk, spreading out three distinct documents side by side: the removal order for Marcus Vance, the fake medical certification bearing a forged physician's signature, and a newly printed corporate registry document she had pulled from the encrypted drive the night before.
Nico sat by the window, a cup of black coffee cooling untouched on the small table beside him. His knuckles were bruised, and the strain of the previous night's escape had left dark circles under his eyes, but his gaze was locked entirely on the courtyard below.
"They aren't stopping, Nico," Adeline said quietly, breaking the heavy silence of the room. She tapped the third document with her pen. "This isn't just about Marcus or Camille. Look at the corporate lineage of the shell company that funded the telemetry jammer in your car."
Nico turned his wheelchair around, wheeling slowly toward the desk. "Whose name is on the registry?"
"It’s not a person," Adeline said, looking up at him with a gravity that made the room feel suddenly smaller. "It’s a subsidiary trust managed by Vanguard Holdings. And Vanguard Holdings doesn't just own a stake in Alfieri Shipping. They own a controlling interest in the medical facility where your physical therapy is being monitored."
Nico stared at the paper. The realization didn't shock him anymore; it settled over him like a cold, heavy winter coat.
"My uncle," Nico said, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Richard."
"Your uncle Richard has been living in Zurich for six years," Adeline noted, shaking her head. "Everyone on the board thinks he retired from corporate life after your father passed away."
"Richard never retires," Nico replied, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "He just lets other people take the fall while he reorganizes the board from across an ocean. If Vanguard Holdings controls the therapy clinic, then every doctor report, every prescription dosage, and every movement I’ve made since the accident has been filtered directly back to him."
The heavy oak doors of the library suddenly swung open.
Neither Adeline nor Nico looked surprised when Camille Ashcroft stepped into the room. She wasn't wearing her expensive pearls or her designer gown anymore; she wore a simple black trench coat, her hair pulled back into a severe ponytail, her expression a mix of desperation and cold calculation.
She didn't look at Adeline. Her eyes were fixed entirely on Nico.
"You think you won last night with your little data dump in the ballroom," Camille said, her voice shaking slightly with suppressed rage. "You think Marcus taking the fall cleans your slate."
Nico didn't move. He simply rested his hands on the armrests of his wheelchair, looking up at his former fiancée with absolute indifference. "Marcus was an employee, Camille. You were supposed to be a partner. Big mistake on both counts."
Camille took a step closer, pulling a thick envelope from her coat pocket and tossing it violently onto the desk in front of Adeline.
"Richard is coming back to Chicago," Camille hissed, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper. "And when he walks through the front doors of this estate tomorrow morning, he won't bring lawyers or board resolutions. He’s going to strip every remaining voting share you possess under the morality clause of your father’s will."

Nico looked at the envelope, then back up at Camille, a slow, dangerous smile touching the corners of his mouth.
"Let him come," Nico said softly. "Tell my uncle I’ve still got a few surprises left that aren't on any spreadsheet."
