Chapter 6 - Red and Blue

The flashing red and blue strobes painted the grand ballroom in violent, rhythmic pulses, casting long, frantic shadows across the faces of the trapped board members. The heavy wail of approaching sirens swelled from the gravel drive outside, vibrating through the floorboards and rattling the crystal chandeliers overhead.
Arthur Pendelton gripped his cane so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white. His eyes darted from the glaring projection screen filled with offshore ledgers to Nico’s unblinking gaze, then finally to Marcus Vance, who had already taken a silent step backward toward the shadows of the arched doorway.
"You're bluffing," Arthur choked out, though his voice lacked any of its former boardroom authority. "No prosecutor in Cook County moves this fast on a midnight anonymous data dump. This is a hack. An illegal extraction."
"It's only illegal if you can prove the data was stolen," Nico replied smoothly, his hands resting easily on the armrests of his wheelchair. "And right now, Arthur, your primary concern shouldn't be the Fourth Amendment. It should be whether federal marshals prefer white-collar cells with a view of Lake Michigan or something a bit more utilitarian."
Camille Ashcroft stood frozen, her manicured fingers digging into the fabric of her fur coat as if she were trying to anchor herself to solid ground. The realization that her carefully orchestrated takeover—and the marriage meant to cement her absolute control over the Alfieri empire—was unraveling in real-time seemed to finally break through her icy exterior.
"Marcus," she hissed, turning her head sharply toward her co-conspirator. "Fix this."
Marcus didn't answer her. He had already slipped his hand inside his suit jacket, his fingers brushing against something heavy and metallic concealed beneath his vest. His eyes locked onto Adeline, who stood defensively beside Nico's left flank, her body language radiating pure, defensive readiness.
"The police aren't here for us, Nico," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a smooth, venomous purr as he took a slow, calculated step sideways toward the French doors leading to the terrace. "They're here because an anonymous tip reported a violent disturbance and a hostage situation at the Alfieri estate."
Before anyone could react, Marcus drew a sleek, black-finished compact pistol from his holster, leveling the barrel straight at Adeline’s chest.
"Step away from the console, nurse," Marcus ordered, his jaw twitching with adrenaline. "And hand over that drive."
The room inhaled as one. The corporate board members scrambled backward, tripping over their own expensive shoes as they threw themselves behind heavy mahogany tables and velvet sofas. Camille gasped, stumbling away from Marcus as if she were only just realizing what kind of monsters she had partnered with.
Nico’s face twisted into an expression of pure, unadulterated fury. Without thinking, without calculating the limits of his own paralyzed body, he threw his weight forward, lunging out of his wheelchair in a desperate, impossible attempt to tackle Marcus.
He hit the cold marble floor hard, his legs dead weight beneath him, dragging himself forward by his fingertips like a wounded animal protecting its pack.
"Nico, no!" Adeline screamed, but she didn't duck. Instead of running, she threw her body directly into the line of sight between Marcus and Nico, her hands flying up to grip the heavy brass-bound laptop on the podium.
"You're a dead man, Marcus!" Adeline yelled, lifting the laptop and hurling it with all her strength straight at his face.
The heavy machine caught Marcus square in the chest, knocking the wind out of him with a brutal thud and sending his gun spinning across the polished floorboards just as the heavy front doors of the mansion blew open with a deafening crash.
Footsteps—heavy, booted, and accompanied by the unmistakable metallic clatter of service weapons—flooded into the foyer.

"Federal agents! Nobody move!" a voice bellowed from the hallway.
Marcus, gasping for air and clutching his bruised ribs, lunged frantically for his dropped weapon. Adeline threw herself onto the floor to block him, but before either of them could reach the gun, a laser sight red dot flickered across Marcus’s forehead, followed by the cold, sharp command: "Hands behind your head! Do it now!"
