Chapter 8 - The Ghost of the Garage

The underground parking structure beneath the Alfieri corporate headquarters in downtown Chicago was cold, damp, and smelled faintly of exhaust fumes and wet concrete. The security guards had been cleared out three hours ago by federal subpoena, leaving the cavernous three-level garage as silent as a tomb.
A single overhead fluorescent light flickered erratically above Sector C, casting long, jittery shadows across the concrete floor where Nico’s black luxury sedan still sat behind police tape.
Adeline held a heavy-duty tactical flashlight, its bright beam cutting through the gloom, illuminating the crumpled front bumper and the shattered passenger-side headlight.
"Be careful," Adeline warned, steadying Nico’s wheelchair as they navigated a patch of oil-stained pavement. "The federal investigators already processed the primary evidence, but the impound lot wanted too much to hold the wreck here. Marcus had it towed back to private storage."
"Marcus didn't want the insurance adjusters looking at the onboard telemetry," Nico muttered, his jaw tight as he stared at the wrecked chassis of the car that had nearly ended his life. He reached out, his fingers brushing against the cold, dented metal of the driver's side door. "This is where my legs stopped working, Adeline. And this is where whoever tried to kill me made their mistake."
Adeline stepped closer, shining her light across the interior dashboard. The steering wheel was locked in place, the airbags deployed and hanging like deflated white ghosts.
"What are we looking for?" she asked, her voice echoing softly in the empty garage. "The police report said the electronic steering module failed due to a sudden power surge."
"Electronic steering modules don't just surge," Nico said, his eyes scanning the lower floorboard near the pedals. "They have redundant manual overrides. Unless someone physically severed the backup hydraulic line before I took the keys out of the ignition that night."
Adeline knelt down, sliding her flashlight beam lower, aiming straight into the dark cavity beneath the steering column.
At first, she saw only dust, tangled wires, and the plastic housing of the fuse box. But something else caught the light—a faint, unnatural glint of silver.
"Nico, look at this," she murmured, reaching out with a gloved hand.
wedged deep inside the secondary wiring harness was a small, cylindrical device no larger than a cigarette lighter. It was wired directly into the vehicle's primary ignition fuse, wrapped in black electrical tape to blend seamlessly with the factory cables.
"A remote telemetry jammer," Nico breathed, leaning forward, his voice dropping to a whisper of pure realization. "It didn't just cause a power surge. It locked the brakes the second I hit sixty miles per hour on the interstate ramp."
"And it wasn't installed at the factory," Adeline added, her fingers gently tracing the edge of the device without disturbing its position. "Look at the serial number laser-etched on the side. It matches the inventory tags from the Alfieri private security arm. Marcus didn't just authorize this—he had his own detail plant it."
Suddenly, the eerie silence of the parking garage was shattered by a sharp, metallic sound echoing from the ramp above.
Clang.
It sounded like a heavy iron fire door being forced open.
Adeline snapped her flashlight off instantly, plunging them into near-total darkness, save for the flickering glow of the distant overhead light.

"Did you hear that?" Adeline whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"Footsteps," Nico whispered back, his hands gripping the wheels of his chair, his body tense and ready. "And they're coming down the ramp."
