Chapter 10 - The VIP Lounge

The private executive VIP lounge behind the grand ballroom was a sanctuary of soft lighting, plush leather seating, and polished walnut paneling.
Adrian pushed open the heavy double doors, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. The room was empty save for one person standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the frozen expanse of Lake Michigan.
Camille stood with her back to the door, looking out at the glittering skyline, her hands resting calmly in the pockets of her blue silk trousers. She did not turn around immediately as the heavy door clicked shut behind Adrian.
"You didn't have to ruin the firm to prove a point," Adrian said, his voice breaking slightly as he stepped further into the quiet room. The polished arrogance of his past life was completely gone, replaced by a raw, desperate need for an explanation.
Camille slowly turned around. Her eyes were cool, steady, and entirely unreadable.
"I didn't ruin the firm, Adrian," Camille said, her voice quiet but piercingly sharp. "I simply stopped protecting you from the wreckage you created yourself."
Adrian took a step closer, his hands gesturing defensively. "After ten years? After everything we built together, you dismantled it in less than twenty-four hours just to humiliate me publicly? Is that what this was—revenge?"
A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of Camille’s lips, though there was no humor in it. "You still don't get it, do you? You think everything in our lives has always revolved around your ego. You think my success is a personal attack on yours."
"You took my company, Camille!" Adrian raised his voice, the frustration finally boiling over. "You took my assets, my credit lines, my board members, and my reputation! You left me with nothing!"
"I took back what was mine," Camille corrected sharply, taking a firm step forward, closing the distance between them with an intensity that made Adrian instinctively recoil. "Every strategy that built Blackwell & Rourke originated from my desk while you were busy taking the credit and entertaining women like Sienna in hotel suites."
Adrian opened his mouth to retort, but the words caught in his throat.
"And as for leaving you with nothing," Camille continued, her voice dropping into a dangerous, chilling whisper, "you are entirely mistaken. I didn't leave you with nothing."
She reached down, picked up a slim black leather portfolio from the glass coffee table beside her, and tossed it onto the edge of the desk right in front of him.
"What is this?" Adrian asked, his voice trembling as he looked down at the gold-embossed seal.
"That," Camille said, turning her back to look out the window once more, "is the preliminary asset forfeiture notice filed by the federal prosecutor's office twenty minutes ago. And attached to it is something your new corporate partners didn't tell you before they abandoned you this morning."
Adrian’s hands shook as he unclasped the portfolio and flipped open the cover. The top document was a federal warrant—not for corporate compliance violations, but for asset concealment and systemic financial fraud, listing Adrian Blackwell as the sole primary target.
Beneath it was a second document: a bank routing ledger showing that all remaining liquid capital from the Blackwell & Rourke accounts had just been transferred into an escrow account controlled by an unknown third party.
Adrian looked up, his face entirely drained of color. "Who... who authorized this transfer? Who holds the escrow?"
Before Camille could answer, the heavy double doors of the private lounge swung open with a loud bang.
Three federal marshals in dark tactical vests stepped into the room, their badges gleaming under the soft lights, flanked by a tall, silver-haired man Adrian recognized instantly as the chief federal prosecutor for the Northern District of Illinois.
The prosecutor stepped forward, fixing his eyes coldly on Adrian.
"Mr. Adrian Blackwell," the prosecutor said, his voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, corporate asset concealment, and conspiracy to obstruct compliance audits. Turn around and place your hands behind your back."
May you like
Adrian stood paralyzed, his eyes darting from the marshals to the open portfolio on the desk, and finally toward the window where Camille stood silently in the soft afternoon light.
She did not look back as the cold steel cuffs clicked sharply around his wrists.
