Chapter 6 - The Public Execution

The glowing screen of Chloe’s tablet cast a harsh, ghostly blue light across Adrian’s frozen face. The headline of the press release burned into his retinas with terrifying clarity: Northstar Dominion Files Forensic Audit Exposing Systematic Misrepresentation at Blackwell & Rourke.

"Read it," Adrian commanded, his voice hollow, stripped of all its usual boardroom thunder.

Chloe’s hands trembled so violently she could barely keep the device steady. "It... it details the irregularities in the Q3 municipal bond allocations from two years ago. The ones you insisted on pushing through despite the internal risk flags. And the overseas shell company transfers... she has the routing numbers, Adrian. She has the exact wire receipts."

Adrian snatched the tablet from her grip, his eyes racing down the scrolling text. It wasn't just a general accusation; it was a surgical dissection of every shortcut, every aggressive accounting maneuver, and every risky bet he had made over the past half-decade—all of it signed off with Camille's full legal name as validating executive witness. She hadn't just left him; she had locked him inside a glass cage for the entire financial world to watch.

Within three minutes of the press release going live, Adrian’s private mobile phone began to ring. It wasn't Arthur Vance this time. It was the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission’s regional compliance division.

He didn't answer. He let it ring until the voicemail picked up, the monotonous buzzing sounding like a digital death rattle.

"Mr. Blackwell?" Chloe asked quietly, her voice laced with sudden, palpable fear for her own career. "What do we tell the media downstairs? Reporters are already gathering in the lobby. Security says they’re refusing to leave."

Adrian stared out the window into the gathering winter dusk. Across the frozen Chicago River, the sleek glass facade of Northstar Dominion’s regional headquarters burned with bright, triumphant lights on the upper floors. He could almost picture Camille standing up there, looking out over the city she had quietly built, watching his empire crumble under the weight of her absolute truth.

"Tell them nothing," Adrian whispered, his jaw clenched so tight a sharp pain shot through his molars. "Lock down the floor. No one speaks to the press."

He turned back toward his desk, reaching for his briefcase to pack his things, when the heavy oak door flew open wide.

Marcus Thorne stood in the doorway, his face purple with rage, holding his own phone high in the air like a weapon.

"It's over, Adrian," Marcus shouted, his voice shaking the quiet air of the office. "The board just received an emergency acquisition buyout offer from Northstar for our entire commercial division—at thirty cents on the dollar. And half our partners just accepted it."

Adrian froze, his fingers gripping the leather handle of his briefcase. "Accepted it?"

"They didn't wait for your permission," Marcus sneered, stepping closer, his eyes flashing with utter contempt. "Camille didn't just expose your accounting; she guaranteed immunity to every partner who jumps ship to Northstar right now. You aren't fighting a corporate rival, Adrian. You're being executed by the person who kept you alive."

Before Adrian could form a single word of defense, the main office telephone bank began to ring in unison across the entire executive floor—dozens of lines lighting up simultaneously in a deafening, chaotic chorus of total collapse.
