Chapter 5 - The Line in the Sand

The phone line crackled with static for three agonizing seconds before Camille spoke. Her voice was not angry, nor was it triumphant; it was devastatingly calm, distant, and professional, as if she were speaking to a minor corporate vendor whose contract was under review.

"Mr. Blackwell," Camille said, using a formal title that felt like a physical slap across Adrian’s face. "If this is regarding corporate restructuring or debt settlement, you need to direct your communications through Northstar Dominion’s legal counsel, Elizabeth Vance. My personal extension is no longer active."

"Camille, stop it," Adrian choked out, abandoning all pretense of corporate pride as desperation clawed at his throat. "Drop the corporate routine. It’s me. We’ve been married for ten years. You can't just destroy everything we built together because of a bruised ego over a divorce hearing!"

A soft, cold laugh echoed from the other end of the line—short, devoid of any warmth or nostalgia.

"Destroy everything we built?" Camille repeated, her tone turning ice-cold. "Adrian, for ten years, I built an empire while you took the bows. I protected your blind spots, absorbed your insults, and watched you stand silently by while another woman took credit for my mind. You didn't lose your empire today because of a bruised ego. You lost it because you finally had to face the consequences of treating a partner like property."

"I made mistakes!" Adrian yelled, his voice echoing off the glass walls of his empty office. "Every marriage has faults! But we can fix this—we can sit down, we can renegotiate the asset terms, we can—we can merge our portfolios under a joint venture! You want recognition? I’ll give you public recognition! We can announce you as co-founder of Blackwell & Rourke tomorrow morning in the press!"

Silence stretched across the line, heavy and suffocating. Adrian held his breath, praying that the magic word—*recognition*—would crack her resolve, just as it always had in the past when she quietly backed down from arguments.

When Camille finally spoke, her voice was softer, but infinitely more dangerous.

"Ten years ago, Adrian, I would have cried if you said those words," Camille said softly. "Five years ago, I would have believed them. But yesterday morning, standing on the courthouse steps while it sleeted into my hair, I realized something liberating."

"What?" Adrian whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What did you realize?"

"That I don't need your permission to be brilliant," Camille said clearly. "And I certainly don't need your crumbs."

"Camille, wait—don't hang up—"

"Goodbye, Adrian. Good luck with the board meeting tomorrow."

The line went dead with a sharp click.

Adrian lowered the phone slowly from his ear, staring at the dead screen as cold dread washed over him. But before he could even process the finality of her words, the door to his office swung open without a knock.

It was Chloe, looking terrified, holding a tablet up like a shield.

"Mr. Blackwell... you need to see this right now," she stammered, her voice shaking. "Northstar Dominion just issued a public press release."

Adrian didn't move. "What does it say?"

"They didn't just announce the hostile acquisition of our regional assets," Chloe whispered, her eyes wide with shock. "They just published a detailed public audit of every major financial irregularity at Blackwell & Rourke over the past five years—signed, documented, and certified by Camille Rowan herself."

Adrian stared at her, the blood draining entirely from his face as the ultimate trap finally snapped shut around him.
