Chapter 10 - The Vault is Empty

The morning air felt suddenly freezing as Agent Miller snatched the tablet from the sheriff’s hands. Her eyes scanned the flashing digital interface, and the color instantly drained from her face.
"Wiped clean?" Agent Miller repeated, her voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "How is that possible? The federal firewall was mirrored to three off-site servers."
"It wasn't a remote hack," the sheriff panted, pointing a shaking finger toward the dense woods bordering the eastern pasture. "The system override came from a physical terminal inside the estate's bomb shelter. Someone on the inside gave them the master encryption key."
My head snapped toward Marcus. He was staring at the ground, his face pale and hollow, his hands trembling violently.
"Marcus," I said, my voice dangerously quiet. "Look at me."
He slowly raised his head, his eyes swimming with a mixture of guilt and absolute terror. "It wasn't me, Elena. I swear to God, I didn't know."
"Who knew the master key code, Marcus?" I stepped right up to him, grabbing his jacket lapels. "Your father is in handcuffs. The hired men are secured. Who else had access to the bunker?"
Before Marcus could answer, a loud, deep mechanical rumble shook the ground beneath our feet.
We all turned toward the eastern wing of the ancestral stone mansion. In the center of the manicured lawn, a heavy iron ventilation grate slowly slid sideways, belching a thick plume of gray smoke into the crisp morning sky. From deep within the subterranean shaft, the faint, haunting sound of an engine revving echoed through the earth.
Agent Miller drew her sidearm, pointing it squarely at the smoking vent. "Stand back! Everyone stay back!"
Suddenly, a heavy-duty all-terrain utility vehicle burst out of the underground shaft, shattering the decorative garden hedges and tearing across the lawn toward the tree line. Through the mud-spattered windshield, I caught a brief, terrifying glimpse of the driver.
It wasn't Julian. It wasn't one of the hired guards.
It was a woman wearing a tailored vintage silk dress, her face partially obscured by a wide-brimmed hat, gripping the steering wheel with absolute, chilling precision as she vanished into the dark shadows of the perimeter woods.

"After them!" Agent Miller screamed, but it was already too late. The vehicle had disappeared into the thick timberland, leaving us standing amidst the wreckage of a ruined estate.
And as the police sirens wailed in the background, I realized with a sickening jolt of clarity that Julian Ashford was only ever the distraction. The true mastermind of the Ashford family empire was still out there—and she had just taken every secret we uncovered with her.
