Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Floorboards

"Don't move," a gravelly, low whisper hissed directly into my ear, hot and sour against my neck.
Every muscle in my body locked. The grip on my shoulder was heavy, unyielding, carrying the weight of a man accustomed to absolute obedience.
"Dad?" Marcus mumbled from across the bed, his voice thick with heavy sleep. The sudden sound made me gasp, though I kept my face pressed tightly against the pillow. "Dad, what's... is everything okay?"
"Go back to sleep, boy," my father-in-law murmured back, his voice dropping instantly into a soothing, paternal cadence that completely masked the vicious strength with which his fingers were still digging into my collarbone. "The ritual requires absolute focus. The mother must remain still for the blessing to take root."
"Right... sorry," Marcus muttered, already fading back into unconsciousness, his breathing evening out within seconds. The absolute uselessness of my husband washed over me like a dash of freezing water. He wasn't just blind; he was an active participant in his own subjugation to this patriarch.
The heavy hand slowly relaxed its grip on my shoulder, sliding back into the center of the bed. But sleep was gone, replaced by a surge of pure, unadulterated adrenaline.
Thirty minutes passed in agonizing silence. The digital clock flickered to 3:45 a.m.
I heard the subtle, creaking sound of floorboards shifting. It wasn't coming from the bed. It was coming from the corner of the room near the antique armoire.
Through my lowered lashes, I saw a dark silhouette detach itself from the shadows. My father-in-law had slipped out from under the covers with the agility of a man half his age. He wasn't wearing shoes, moving across the Persian rug with silent, practiced stealth.
He didn't head toward the door. Instead, he knelt down in front of the ornate wooden armoire that dominated the eastern wall of the bridal suite. I watched, my breath caught in my throat, as he slid his fingers beneath the heavy baseboard molding. With a faint click, a small wooden panel popped open, revealing a hidden compartment set deep into the foundation of the old house.
He reached inside and pulled out a heavy, leather-bound ledger. By the faint, silvery moonlight filtering through the lace curtains, I saw him flip open the pages, running a calloused finger down a handwritten list of names and dates that spanned decades.
My stomach plummeted. Those weren't family recipes or land deeds. Based on the columns of dates and initials, it looked like a registry of births—and marriages.
Suddenly, my father-in-law stiffened. He slowly turned his head away from the ledger, his gaze locking directly onto the bed where I lay pretending to sleep. He knew I was watching.

Before I could close my eyes, he stood up, closed the ledger with a soft thud, and began walking slowly back toward the bed in the dark.
