Chapter 9 - The Siege at Dawn

"Federal agents! Stay where you are! Put your hands on your head!"

The bullhorn’s roar rattled the antique windowpanes of the hallway, instantly shattering the suffocating control my father-in-law held over the estate. Before Julian or his hired men could react, tactical officers in black riot gear swarmed up the grand staircase like a human wave, assault rifles raised and laser sights painting the walls in crimson arcs.

My father-in-law spun around, his arrogant composure instantly cracking into sheer fury as a federal marshal slammed him hard against the hallway wall, snapping steel handcuffs around his wrists.

"You have no jurisdiction here! This is private ancestral property!" Julian bellowed, thrashing against the officers as they forced him down.

"Shut your mouth, Mr. Ashford," the lead federal investigator barked, stepping past the struggling men and walking directly into our bridal suite. She was a sharp-eyed woman in a tailored dark suit, her badge gleaming in the morning light. She looked at Marcus, then at me holding the brass candlestick, and finally down at the open ledger and cassette player on the floor.

"Elena Vance?" the investigator asked, looking directly at me.

"Elena Ashford," I corrected her firmly, lowering the candlestick. "Though I’m working very hard to fix that last name."

The investigator offered a grim, approving smile. "I’m Agent Miller with federal financial and missing persons crimes division. We’ve been tracking the Ashford family trust for three years. Your emergency satellite beacon pinged at 4:00 a.m., transmitting coordinates and financial records straight to our precinct."

Marcus stared at me, his jaw dropping in utter disbelief. "A satellite beacon? Elena, when did you—?"

"Before I even walked down the aisle, Marcus," I interrupted, walking past him toward the hallway. "When a man insists on archaic, bizarre traditions and isolates you in a remote hometown, a smart woman prepares an exit strategy. I didn't trust your family from day one."

Agent Miller gestured toward the stairs. "We need to evacuate the property immediately. Local authorities have uncovered a subterranean network beneath the eastern wing tied to at least three cold cases from the past thirty years."

As officers escorted a handcuffed, furious Julian Ashford down the grand staircase, I felt a massive wave of liberation wash over me. The nightmare of our wedding night was finally collapsing under the weight of its own crimes.

Or so I foolishly believed.

Just as Agent Miller led Marcus and me out the front doors into the blinding morning sunlight, a state police cruiser came screeching up the gravel driveway, its tires throwing up dirt and stone. The back door flew open, and a frantic local sheriff rushed out, grabbing Agent Miller by the arm.

May you like

"Agent Miller, you need to see this," the sheriff gasped, holding up a bloodstained tablet. "We just intercepted an emergency distress call from the eastern perimeter. Someone just broke into the estate's central data vault... and they wiped every single financial backup clean."
