Chapter 8 - The Saint Aurelia Vault

The Saint Aurelia Women’s Pavilion looked entirely different at two in the morning. The daytime hustle of nurses, patients, and visitors had vanished, replaced by an eerie, sterile quiet. The clinical white corridors echoed with the faint, rhythmic dripping of a distant leaky faucet, and the overhead fluorescent lights buzzed with a low, maddening frequency.

Arthur and I slipped through the service loading dock using a magnetic security pass he had procured from a high-level corporate contact inside the Vances' inner circle.

"Level three," Arthur whispered, keeping his voice low as we stepped into the back service elevator. "The pediatric observation ward was cleared out an hour ago under Julian’s orders. They moved Sofía to the basement pharmaceutical vault."

"The basement?" My stomach twisted into a violent knot. "Why would a child be in a pharmaceutical vault?"

"Because that’s where they store the physical records of the offshore medical trials," Arthur said grimly, pressing the basement button. "The clinic isn't just a hospital, Elena. It’s a front for illegal asset consolidation and identity restructuring. They take children born into unapproved bloodlines, alter their records, and reassign them to subsidiary trusts."

The elevator car jerked to a halt, the heavy metal doors sliding open to reveal a windowless concrete hallway lined with reinforced steel doors.

We crept down the corridor, our footsteps completely silent against the rubberized flooring. At the end of the hall, a heavy electronic keypad glowed with a soft blue light. Standing directly in front of it, talking quietly into a secure satellite phone, was Marcus Vance.

My husband.

He wasn't sitting in a jail cell, and he wasn't cowering before federal authorities. He was wearing an expensive cashmere overcoat, looking entirely composed as he argued in hushed tones with someone on the other end of the line.

"I don't care what the federal prosecutor says, Julian," Marcus hissed into the phone. "Just make sure the transfer clears through the Cayman accounts before sunrise. Elena is completely out of the picture now—she ran off with Arthur’s decoy."

A cold wave of absolute betrayal washed over me, instantly burning away every lingering shred of sympathy I had ever felt for the man.

I stepped out from around the corner, my voice ringing clear and hard against the concrete walls.

"She didn't run off, Marcus. She came to collect."

May you like

Marcus spun around, dropping his phone, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated terror as he stared at me standing beside Arthur Sterling.
