Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

Marcus stumbled backward against the reinforced steel door of the vault, his hands flying up in a defensive gesture. "Elena... how did you—this isn't what it looks like, I was just playing along to protect you from my uncle—"
"Save it, Marcus," I interrupted, my voice devoid of emotion, sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel. I closed the distance between us, my eyes locked on his trembling face. "You sold out your own daughter for a seat at Julian Vance’s table. You watched your mother abuse a six-year-old child and you played the helpless victim while running offshore wire transfers behind my back."
"He had no choice, my dear," a smooth, cultured voice echoed from the end of the hallway.
We both turned. Walking slowly out of the shadows near the elevator alcove was an elderly man with immaculate silver hair, wearing a tailored three-piece charcoal suit and a gold signet ring that caught the fluorescent light. Julian Vance. The patriarch himself, smiling with the sickening warmth of a grandfather greeting his favorite relative.
"Julian," Arthur said quietly, resting his hand casually inside his jacket pocket. "You're up late for a man whose empire is about to collapse."
Julian didn't look at Arthur. His dark, calculating eyes remained fixed entirely on me. "Empire doesn't collapse, Arthur. It evolves. And young Elena here has proven to be a remarkably resilient variable in our little equation."
"Where is my daughter?" I demanded, ignoring his pleasantries completely. I stepped toward him, my fists clenched at my sides. "If you’ve laid a hand on Sofía, I swear to God I will burn every single offshore account you own to ash."
Julian chuckled softly, a dry, papery sound. "Such spirit. It’s almost a shame what has to happen next." He gestured toward the reinforced steel door behind Marcus. "Your daughter is inside, perfectly safe, sleeping in a climate-controlled recovery suite. She hasn't been harmed in the slightest—yet."
Marcus scrambled to his feet, looking frantically between his uncle and me. "Uncle Julian, you promised! You said if we secured the trusts, Elena wouldn't be brought into this!"
"Quiet, boy," Julian snapped, his polite facade instantly vanishing into cold, corporate malice. "You’ve proven to be just as weak and sentimental as your father was before we burned him out of his office twenty-five years ago."
The words hit Marcus like a physical blow. He staggered, staring at his uncle with wide, horrified eyes. "What... what did you say about my father?"
"Your father wanted to turn the family assets over to federal regulators," Julian said smoothly, stepping closer. "So we arranged a little domestic accident. Just like we're going to arrange a very tragic, unfortunate disappearance for you, your wife, and your daughter tonight."
May you like
Before Marcus could even scream, Julian pulled a silenced pistol from his jacket pocket and pointed it directly at his own nephew's chest.
