Chapter 7 - Altitude and Accountability

The private Gulfstream jet cut through the crisp morning clouds at thirty-five thousand feet, cruising smoothly toward Teterboro Airport outside New York City. Inside the cabin, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the chaotic morning we had left behind in Washington.

My mother sat by the window, sipping a cup of chamomile tea served in fine bone china, her expression a mix of lingering disbelief and profound, quiet relief. Dr. Vance, who had accompanied us on Arthur’s orders to monitor her recovery, was gently checking the bandages on her wrists, ensuring the swelling was finally receding.

Oliver and Emma were engrossed in a high-tech digital tablet game at the opposite end of the luxury cabin, completely unfazed by the multi-million-dollar empire shifting around them.

I sat across from Arthur Sterling at the polished mahogany conference table built into the aircraft’s main cabin, reviewing a thick portfolio of international corporate acquisitions.

"You handled that domestic termination with remarkable precision, Sabrina," Arthur remarked, sliding a fresh document across the table. "Most people allow emotional sentiment to cloud their judgment when cutting off toxic dead weight. You treated it like a bad quarterly asset."

"Sentiment is an expensive luxury, Arthur," I replied without looking up from the pages. "I spent seven years funding a man who treated my mother like a piece of rented equipment. The only mistake I made was waiting this long to audit the books."

Arthur chuckled softly, leaning back into his leather seat. "Well, your delay has played directly into our hands. With Apex Consulting’s liquidity frozen and Richard Vance facing a federal forensic audit for corporate embezzlement, the board’s path to acquiring their European logistics network is completely unobstructed. But that brings us to the real reason I summoned you to New York today."

He tapped a finger against a confidential file stamped with red classification seals.

"What is it?" I asked, setting my pen down.

"Word of your corporate restructuring has already leaked to the upper tiers of the financial sector," Arthur said, his voice dropping into a serious, conspiratorial tone. "Specifically, to Julian Vance—Richard’s estranged older brother and the primary stakeholder behind Apex Logistics & Security."

My eyes narrowed. "The same Julian Vance who runs the private security conglomerate currently under federal investigation for illegal arms trafficking?"

May you like

"The very same," Arthur confirmed grimly. "And he believes you are the one responsible for freezing his brother’s illicit accounts. He’s landing in New York this afternoon. And he isn't coming to negotiate."
