Chapter 2 - The Glass Tower

The glass-and-steel monolith of Vale Meridian rose forty-five stories above downtown Chicago, its polished exterior reflecting the gray, overcast autumn sky.

Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. The mahogany conference table, polished to a mirror finish, reflected the worried faces of our five senior vice presidents. At the head of the table sat Julian’s empty leather chair, gleaming and immaculate.

The double doors swung open precisely at 8:58 a.m.

Julian strode into the room, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and sea salt, his bespoke charcoal suit tailored to perfection. He looked refreshed, radiant with the arrogant confidence of a man who believed a weekend in Napa had successfully reset his marital and professional standing.

“Alright, everyone, take your seats,” Julian announced, tossing a leather folder onto the table with a sharp slap. He didn't even look at me sitting quietly near the foot of the table, though my mother and Maya flanked my chair like silent sentinels. “I apologize for the abrupt summons, but I’ve just flown back from the coast, and we have an emergency merger proposal with Vanguard Holdings to review before the markets open.”

Not a single person at the table moved.

Julian frowned, his gaze sweeping around the room. His smile faltered just slightly as he noticed the grim silence of the executives. Finally, his eyes landed on me.

“Evelyn?” Julian let out a light, dismissive laugh, shaking his head. “What are you doing here? You look like death warmed over. I told you before I left to stay home and rest. You shouldn't be wandering around corporate headquarters in your condition.”

I didn't blink. I didn't raise my voice. I simply placed a thick manila folder directly on the polished mahogany surface and pushed it across the table toward him.

“Sit down, Julian,” I said.

Julian’s jaw tightened. He ignored the folder, leaning his palms against the edge of the table and towering over me. “Evelyn, don't play games with me. I have a billion-dollar acquisition waiting on a signed LOI from Vanguard. I don’t have time for whatever post-partum hysterics—”

“I said, sit down, Julian,” I repeated, my voice dropping an octave, carrying a cold, military authority that cut through the silence of the room like a scalpel.

For a fraction of a second, something flickered behind Julian’s eyes—a sudden, uneasy realization that the woman sitting across from him was no longer the quiet wife he had left behind six days ago.
