Chapter 7 - The Subterranean Chase

The two operatives closed in on my position, their heavy boots echoing rhythmically off the concrete floor. I knew I couldn't outrun them in heels, and my body was still recovering from the trauma of the hospital. I needed to change the rules of engagement.

Quickly slipping off my high heels, I dropped them behind the pillar and moved in stocking feet toward the dark recesses of the building's maintenance bay, where the service elevators and old freight shafts descended into the sub-basement.

“Over here! She dropped her shoes!” one of the men shouted from near my SUV.

“Cut off the service corridor leading to the freight elevators!”

I slipped through the heavy steel door of the maintenance bay just as heavy footfalls pounded down the aisle I had vacated seconds earlier. The room smelled of ozone, old oil, and damp cement. Rows of electrical panels and breaker boxes lined the walls, casting long, eerie shadows under flickering fluorescent bulbs.

I reached blindly across the main circuit panel, my fingers finding the heavy master lever labeled EMERGENCY POWER - BASEMENT SECTOR B.

With all my remaining strength, I yanked the lever down.

A loud, metallic CLANG echoed through the bay, followed instantly by total, pitch-black darkness. The humming fluorescent lights died all at once, plunging the entire sub-level into an abyss of absolute shadow.

Cursing echoed from the corridor outside as my pursuers slammed to a halt in the sudden darkness.

“Damn it! She cut the main breaker!”
